Supplications after prayer

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Dear brother assalamu alaikum

My question is is it fard or compelsory to read duva after namaz . is it true that without some special types of duvas like Allahum ma antas salam ...........   are must & without supplicating this duve salath is not accepted. Is it right to say ya rasullallah. Some peoples add so many extra words in darood like moulana etc    & some extend it too long like at the end of darood they add as salatu assalmu alaike ya habibi ya rasool allah .  And in india its quit common that after namaz they suplicate (duva) innallah hu malaikati ......... & in reply all muktadee say long darood loudly. pls answer

Answer:

Supplications after prayer

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question:…..my question is is it fard or compelsory to read duva after namaz

It is indeed an opportune time for a believer to make supplications after any good deed…be it reciting the Glorious Quran, offering a sacrifice, completing a prayer or a fast, giving charity or zakah, completing a pilgrimage, etc.

To make supplications after the prayer is definitely not a fard or compulsory act, but rather an extremely preferred Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws).  If one avails the opportunity and makes supplications after one’s prayer (or any good deed) one would not only increase one’s chances of one’s supplications being answered, but also receive a huge reward from their Lord Most Gracious….and if for any reason one forgets or happens to abstain from making a supplication, there is absolutely no harm and no sin upon them.

Your Question: ….Is it true that without some special types of duvas like Allahum ma antas salam ...........   are must & without supplicating this duve salath is not accepted.

Reported Thauban, "When the Prophet (saws) would finish his prayer, he would seek Allah's forgiveness three times and then say, 'O Allah, You are The Peace, and from You is Peace. You are filled with Good, O Sublime and Honorable One." (Related by Muslim)

It was the practice of the Messenger of Allah (saws) to make several supplications after the completion of his prayer, and the above quoted supplication is indeed one amongst the ‘masnoon’ supplications.

We reiterate again that there is no dua or supplication which one is obliged or required to make after the completion of their prayer, but rather the making of supplications after prayer is considered an extremely preferred Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws), and thus voluntary.

If one has performed the ‘wudu’ perfectly and fulfilled all the obligatory requirements of prayer….regardless of whether one chooses to make supplications after the completion of one’s prayer or not, their prayer will be acceptable to their Lord Most Gracious, Insha Allah.

Your Question: …..And in india its quit common that after namaz they suplicate (duva) innallah hu malaikati ......... & in reply all muktadee say long darood loudly.

There is indeed enough evidence in the Sunnah whereby the Messenger of Allah (saws) and his noble companions would make supplications on an individual basis after the completion of their salaah.

But to the best of our knowledge, there is absolutely no evidence in the authentic and established Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws) whereby he (saws) as the ‘imam’ would ever make collective supplications with the congregation after the fard prayers, or after any other prayers for that matter.

It would be best for the ‘imaams’ who lead the prayers and the believers at large to abstain from doing something in the deen which was neither practiced nor endorsed by the Messenger of Allah (saws); for that then would indeed constitute a case for introducing or following a ‘bida’ or innovation in the deen.

Aisha narrated that the Messenger of Allah (saws) said: ‘If somebody innovates something which is not present in our religion, then that thing will be rejected.’

Related by Bukhari.

If one trusts, obeys, and follows the guidance and commands of Allah and His Messenger (saws),   one can be assured of never ever being misled;   but if one believes, obeys and follows any other guidance, other than that of Allah and His Messenger (saws), one can be assured of being led astray.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
