One of our brothers/sisters has asked
this question:
Assalaam alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu
I got some of gold which I was gifted at the time of my
marriage by friends and relatives not husband. This is not dowry
(meher). Now I cant use it since it is out of fashion and now I have
decided to sell it and have something of lattest style. Someone said I cant
sell it and buy another item from the same jewellery shop. Or can I sell it
today and buy from the same shop after some days? Please guide me
accordingly by letting me know what exactly shall I do so as not to
doany mistake on this matter.

Answer:
Lawful to sell gold
In the name of Allah,
We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah
guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide
them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah
Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the
seal of His Messengers.
Respected sister, if you have
some gold which belongs to you, and you wish to sell it and buy something else
with its sales proceeds, to the best of our knowledge there is absolutely
nothing in Shariah Law which prohibits such a transaction.
If the gold belongs to you, you
are well within your rights to do with it as you will and please. You may keep
it, or sell it and keep the proceeds, or use the proceeds to buy anything,
anytime, and anywhere you wish and please.
Whatever written of
Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever
of error is of me alone. Allah Alone
Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
Your brother and
well wisher in Islam,
Burhan
