One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Assalamalaikum
Dear Burhan Sahab

a quick queston,  while eating food are we allowed to take help/support with our left hand?

I believe eating with left hand is forbidden but taking help/support with left hand is allowed.  I do not know,  Kindly advise.

Answer:

 

Taking support with left hand eating

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

 

Sahih Muslim Hadith 5008     Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar

Allah's Messenger (saws) said: ‘When any one of you intends to eat, he should eat with his right hand, and when one (intends) to drink he should drink with his right hand, for the Shaytaan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand.’

 

The Messenger of Allah (saws) forbade the believers to eat or drink with their left hand, but if one needs to use one’s left hand as support while eating or drinking there is absolutely no harm and no restriction, provided the food and the drink is entered into one’s mouth with one right hand.

 

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
