Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

ASSALAMALEIKUM,
Dear Brother,

I would like to know one thing, my wife delivered a boy on the 1st of June 2007 and the kid was born dead. We are worried as to why the kid was born dead, is it because of the sins of us (husband and wife) or exactly what it is. As because of this we both are disturbed, as this incident has left a very bad memory on us.

We are believer of allah and we know that whatever he does he does it for our good. But still we are too tensed up for the loss of our baby.

Waiting for your earliest email in this regards.

Khuda hafiz.

Answer:

Dead deceased child patience

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 21 Surah Anbiyaa verse 35:

35      Every soul shall have a taste of death: and We test you by evil and by good (only) by way of trial: to Us must ye return.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 57 Surah Hadid verses 22-23:

22      No misfortune can happen on earth or in your souls but is recorded in a Decree before We bring it into existence: that is truly easy for Allah.

23      In order that ye may not despair over matters that pass you by nor exult over favors bestowed upon you.  For Allah loveth not any vainglorious boaster

The life of this short transitory world is but a test, and Allah Subhanah put every human being through good and through evil conditions by Decree to see who amongst them are grateful for the bounties and mercies they receive from their Lord and who amongst them are ungrateful.

Allah says in the Holy Quran in Chapter 67 Surah Al Mulk verse 2:

He (Allah) created death and life that He may test you, to see which of you is the best in deeds.

Dear and beloved brother in Islam, rest absolutely assured that the unfortunate loss of your baby has absolutely nothing to do with your or anyone’s sins….it was but the Will of Allah Subhanah to put you through this enormous trial to see whether your trust and belief in Him and His Powers remain unchanged, or does the Shaytaan succeed in developing some doubts regarding Him.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verses 155-157:

155    Be sure We shall test you with something of fear, and hunger, some loss in goods, or lives, or the fruits (of your toil); but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere.

156    Who say when afflicted with calamity: "To Allah we belong and to Him is our return."

157    They are those on whom (descend) blessings from Allah and Mercy; and they are the ones that receive guidance.

Fiqh-us-Sunnah Fiqh 4.1

Abu Hurairah narrates that the Prophet (saws) said: "When Allah wants to be good to someone, He tries him with some hardship."

Abu Hurairah reports that Allah's Messenger (saws) said: "For every misfortune, illness, anxiety, grief, or hurt that afflicts a Muslim -even the hurt caused by the pricking of a thorn - Allah removes some of his sins."

Ibn Mas'ud said: "I visited the Messenger of Allah (saws) while he (saws) had a fever. I exclaimed: 'O Messenger of Allah (saws) ! You have a high fever!'  He (saws) said: 'My fever is as much as two among you [might have].'  I asked: 'Is it because you have a double reward?'  He (saws) replied: 'Yes, that is right. No Muslim is afflicted with any hurt, even if it is no more than the pricking of a thorn, but Allah wipes off his sins because of it and his sins fall away from him as leaves fall from a tree'."

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.545         Narrated by Abu Said Al Khudri and Abu Huraira

The Prophet (saws) said, "No fatigue, no disease, no sorrow, no sadness, no hurt, no distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that."

Dear and beloved brother in Islam,  a human being better than you, me, and all of mankind put together was put through a trial similar to yours……Ibraheem, the beloved and infant son of the Noble Messenger of Allah (saws) lost his breath in the Prophet’s (saws) very arms….and brother you would know better than most that there is no bigger burden and trial on this earth than the weight of one’s deceased infant on its fathers shoulders….but this is the recorded reaction and statements of the Prophet of Allah (saws) during his trial:

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 2.390         Narrated by Anas bin Malik

We went with Allah's Messenger (saws) to the blacksmith Abu Saif, and he was the husband of the wet-nurse of Ibrahim (the infant son of the Prophet (saws)). Allah's Messenger (saws) took his son Ibrahim and kissed him and smelled him and later we entered Abu Saif's house and at that time Ibrahim was in his last breaths, and the eyes of Allah's Messenger (saws) started shedding tears. Abdur Rahman bin 'Auf said, "O Allah's Messenger (saws), even you are weeping!"  He (saws) said, "O Ibn 'Auf, this is mercy."  Then he (saws) wept more and said, "The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, but we will not say aught except what pleases our Lord. O Ibrahim! Indeed we are grieved by your separation."

My dear and beloved brother in Islam, as difficult and insurmountable your loss and your trial may seem to be for you and your family at the present time, rest absolutely assured that the loss of the life of your infant child has absolutely nothing to do with your or anyone else’s sins or deeds….it is but a trial your Lord has Willed and Chosen for you to see whether you accept the Will of your Lord with grace and beautiful patience which befits the character of a true believer, or is your faith and trust in your Lord shaken so you start to rebel and revolt against the Decrees and Decisions of your Lord.

Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (r.a.) narrates that the Prophet (saws) said: "When a child of a servant of Allah passes away, Allah asks (although He Knows absolutely everything) to the Angels: 'Did you take the soul of My servant's child?'  They (the Angels) reply: 'Yes.'  He, the Almighty asks: 'Did you take away the apple of my servant's eye?' They (the Angels) reply: 'Yes.' He, the Almighty asks (although He Knows): 'What did My servant say at this?'  They (the Angels) reply: 'He praised You and said: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'a un (Verily we belong to Allah and to Him shall we return)." At this Allah, Glorious and Exalted, Declares: 'Build for My servant a mansion in Paradise and call it the House of Praise (Al-Bayt al-Hamd)'."

May Allah Subhanah bestow upon you and your family His choicest Mercies, Blessings, and Grace and grant the parents of the deceased infant patience to accept their insurmountable loss.  As your humble brothers and well-wishers in this world and the Hereafter, we humbly beseech the Lord Most Gracious to make you and your wife the fortunate inhabitants of the ‘Al-Bayt al-Hamd’ in Paradise, Insha Allah. Ameen.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,
