Please tell me what are the things I person should do if he wishes to sacrifice animals for Eia-Azha.

Answer:

 

Sacrifice and zakah

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

 

Your Question: Please tell me what are the things I person should do if he wishes to sacrifice animals for Eia-Azha.

Beloved brother in Islam, sacrifice is only obligatory upon a believer when one is himself/herself on the pilgrimage of Hajj.  For all the other believers who are not themselves on the Hajj pilgrimage, the sacrifice or ‘qurbani’ on the Day of Adha is a preferred Sunnah, and thus voluntary and supererogatory.

 

If one who is not on the pilgrimage of Hajj offers a sacrifice on the Day of Adha, he/she will receive a huge reward for their worship from their Lord Most Gracious; and if for any reason one does not offer a sacrifice, there is absolutely no obligation or sin upon them.  The most that can be said of one who is not a pilgrim and does not offer a sacrifice on the Day of Adha is that he/she missed a great opportunity to earn huge rewards from Allah Subhanah.

 

Sahih Muslim Hadith 4836     Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah

Allah's Messenger (saws) said: ‘Sacrifice only a grown-up animal, unless it is difficult for you, in which case sacrifice a ram (of even less than a year, but more than six months of age).’

 

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.476         Narrated by Salama bin Al Aqua

The Prophet (saws) said: “ (Of the Sacrifice) eat of it,  and feed of it to others,  and store of it.”

 

Fiqh-us-Sunnah Fiqh 5.115

A person offering a sacrifice may consume, without any restrictions, any amount of meat he may desire. He may likewise give away,  or offer in charity any amount he may wish. Some scholars say that one may eat half,  and give away the other half in charity,  while others say that the meat be divided into three parts. Of these one may keep a part, distribute a part, and give in charity the third part.

 

The guidance of the Messenger of Allah (saws) was to sacrifice an animal who is at least six months of age and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws) was to consume a part of the sacrificial meat, distribute a part of it among his companions,  and give a part of it to the poor and needy.  

 

If one wishes,  one may eat all or part of it,  or distribute all or part of it,  or give to the poor all or part of it.   There is absolutely no restriction on how one should consume the sacrificial meat,  but it would be best to follow the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws) and eat some oneself,  distribute some, and give some to the poor and needy.

Allah Subhanah has ordained the annual payment of ‘zakah’ as an obligatory rite of worship for every eligible believer (man, woman and child) .  If the total nett or excess worth of any believer (man, woman or child) is more than the prescribed ‘nisaab’ of 7.5 tolas of gold (app. 85 grams or app. Value US$1,000.00), then the person is liable to pay the obligatory zakat @ 2.5% on their excess wealth which has been in their possession for a full calendar year.

 

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 9 Surah Taubah verse 60:

60      Alms are for the poor, and the needy, and those employed to administer the (funds), for those whose hearts have been (recently) reconciled (to the Truth), for those in bondage and in debt, in the Cause of Allah, and for the wayfarer: (thus is it) ordained by Allah and Allah is full of Knowledge and Wisdom.

 

Allah Subhanah has prescribed that ‘zakah’ should be paid to any of the above eight listed categoriesonly :

1. To the poor
2. To the needy
3. To those who are employed to administer the zakah funds
4. To those whose hearts have recently been reconciled to the Truth of Islam (new-muslims)
5. For those in bondage
6. For those in debt
7. In the Cause of Allah
8. To the way-farer or traveler

 

Allah Subhanah has Commanded and Guided the believers that ‘Zakaah’ dues may only be distributed to any amongst the above eight categories; for all other categories, one may spend through voluntary and supererogatory charity or ‘sadaqa’ but not through ‘Zakaah’ funds.

 

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
