One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Sir:

This is the third time I m mailing you with the hope tha some day you would answer my question and solve my dilemma. If a man earns thru halal means but adds some interest money to the earnings, does it make the whole lump sum haraam. Can his adult children use that money for everyday expenses or is it better for them to earn their own.

This issue has a bearing on my everyday life and therefore i m eager to get its reply

Answer:

Mix use haraam unlawful money

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: If a man earns thru halal means but adds some interest money to the earnings, does it make the whole lump sum haraam.

Beloved Sister, if one earns one’s livelihood through lawful means but adds some unlawfully earned wealth to his earnings, the whole lump-sum would not be regarded as unlawful in Shariah….the lawful portion earned will remain lawful, and the unlawful portion will be deemed as unlawful.

Your Question: Can his adult children use that money for everyday expenses or is it better for them to earn their own.

It is the duty and the responsibility of the father to provide lawfully earned livelihood for the upkeep of his family and those under his ward.  If one were to provide unlawfully earned wealth for the upkeep of their family or their children, the person who earned the wealth unlawfully alone will bear the burden of the sin.  The family and the children who are dependant on their father will be absolutely blameless if they make use of that unlawfully earned wealth, for it is the responsibility of their father to provide lawfully earned wealth for the upkeep of those under his ward.

If one’s children are adults to the age whereby they are able to earn their own livelihood, and they know for sure that what their father provides for them is from his unlawfully earned wealth….it would be best for them to fear Allah and earn their own livelihood through lawful means.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
