Interpretation of Dream

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Salaam alaikum

My aunt got a dream 3 times, she saw her sister who has died 18 months ago. For the first two days she (who died) said to look after her family. And on the third day she saw that her sister (who has died 18 months ago), is telling to my aunt that she is very hungry, give me food. Then she said she is very thirsty, give me water. But someone is pouring cold water on her instead to give her for drinking. When my aunt told this to her mother, she is very tensed and keeps on crying. She is thinking that this might be the punishment of the grave and she is very upset. She told me to ask someone, like you, whether this could be true or not. So could you please let me know what this could be. I will be very thankful to you if you help me out.

Thanking you.

Salaam alaikum.

Interpretation of Dream

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His  forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol,  no person,  no grave, no prophet,  no imam,  no dai,  nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 9.145         Narrated by Kharija bin Zaid bin Thabit

Um Al-'Ala,  an Ansari woman who had given the Pledge of allegiance to the Prophet (saws) said, “Uthman bin Maz'un came in our share when the Ansars drew lots to distribute the emigrants (to dwell) among themselves. He became sick and we looked after (nursed) him till he died. Then we shrouded him in his clothes. The Messenger of Allah (saws) then came to us.”  I (addressing the dead body) said, “May Allah's Mercy be on you, O Aba As-Sa'ib!  I testify that Allah has honored you.”  The Prophet (saws) said, 'How do you know that?'  I replied, 'I do not know, by Allah.'  He (saws) said, 'As for him, death has come to him and I wish him all good from Allah.   By Allah, though I am Allah's Messenger, I neither know what will happen to me, nor to you.”  Um Al-'Ala said, "By Allah, I will never attest the righteousness of anybody after that."  She added, "Later I saw in a dream, a flowing spring for 'Uthman. So I went to Allah's Messenger (saws) and mentioned that to him.”  He said, 'That is (the symbol of) his good deeds (the reward for) which is going on for him.' "

If one sees a person who is dead in a dream in a good state,  then it is expected that Allah Subhanah has had Mercy on him/her and kept them in a good state because of their deeds.   But if one sees the person who is dead in a bad state,  that would be a symbol of his evil deeds for which he/she is being tormented.

The close relatives and friends of the dead person,  especially the children of the dead parents,  must constantly supplicate Allah Subhanah to have mercy on and forgive their dead loved one;  for Allah Subhanah is indeed Most Merciful and accepts the supplications of His believing slaves.

The Prophet (saws) said in one of his famous narrations:

When a person dies, his book of accounts is closed except for three things:

1. Sadaqa Jaariya. ie. a person who did or spent something in the way of Allah and people are still benefiting from it. Things like mosques, orphanages, wells, planting of trees and the like, which outlive the person who died and benefiting the ummah.

2. Ilm un Naafe'ah. ie. a person who spread knowledge of Islam and people are still benefiting from it after his death. Things like lectures, writing books, good advice he gave to people, or any other knowledge of Islam that the person helped in spreading the word of Allah.

3. Ibn us Saleh. ie. his children who regularly pray to Allah to forgive their father/mother who died.

And Allah Alone Knows Best.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
