Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

What we see in dreams does it comes true?is it true that what dreams we get in fajr time comes true ? should a muslim believe in dreams?

(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer:

Dreams true

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: What we see in dreams does it comes true?

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 9.144         Narrated by Abu Huraira

Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "When the Day of Resurrection approaches, the dreams of a believer will hardly fail to come true, and a dream of a believer is one of forty-six parts of Prophetism, and whatever belongs to Prothetism can never be false."  Muhammad bin Sirin said, "But I say this." He said, "It used to be said, 'There are three types of dreams:

  1. The reflection of one's thoughts and experiences one has during wakefulness,
  2. what is suggested by Satan to frighten the dreamer,
  3. or glad tidings from Allah.

So, if someone has a dream which he dislikes, he should not tell it to others, but get up and offer a prayer.'"

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 9.119         Narrated by Abu Huraira

I heard Allah's Messenger (saws) saying, "Nothing is left of the Prophetism except Al-Mubashshirat."  They asked, "What are Al-Mubashshirat?"  He (saws) replied, "The true good dreams (that conveys glad tidings)."

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 9.168         Narrated by Abu Salama

I used to see a dream which would make me sick till I heard Abu Qatada saying, "I too, used to see a dream which would make me sick till I heard the Prophet (saws) saying, "A good dream is from Allah, so if anyone of you saw a dream which he liked, he should not tell it to anybody except to the one whom he loves, and if he saw a dream which he disliked, then he should seek refuge with Allah from its evil and from the evil of Shaytaan, and spit three times (on his left) and should not tell it to anybody, for it will not harm him."

Your Question: is it true that what dreams we get in fajr time comes true ?

There is absolutely no evidence in the Quran and the authentic Sunnah to suggest that only those dreams which appear at a particular or specific time are true!  All the good dreams of glad tidings are from Allah Subhanah; and all of them are true regardless of what time one envisions or experiences them in their sleep.

Your Question: should a muslim believe in dreams?

A muslim should obviously believe in the ‘concept’ of dreams, but not necessarily in the ‘content’ of the dreams!  The belief of a muslim who sincerely fears Allah and the Last Day is based on the Guidance of the Quran and the Sunnah alone and nothing else. Neither can the contents of a dream be a basis for altering any of the beliefs endorsed by the Quran and the Sunnah, nor can the contents of any dream be a basis for changing any of the laws of Shariah.

For example; if one experiences a dream whereby it is told that there are two gods instead of the One and Only True Lord God, or that there is a Messenger after the Last and Final Messenger (Mohamed (saws)), or that the prayers have now been changed from five to three; or that the pilgrimage of Hajj is now compulsory every year; or that the ‘hijaab’ is no longer obligatory for the believing woman; etc…..the vision of these or any other dreams can not be used as evidence or proof to alter, change, add, or subtract the guidance related in Truth in the Quran and the Sunnah.

Thus in conclusion, one may obviously believe in the ‘concept’ of dreams, but not necessarily in the ‘content’ of dreams!

If one trusts, obeys, and follows the guidance and commands of Allah and His Messenger (saws),   one can be assured of never ever being misled;   but if one believes, obeys and follows any other guidance, other than that of Allah and His Messenger (saws), one can be assured of being led astray.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
