Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

disturbing
dreams
Salaam
Ualaikum
I am
e-mailing you to ask for your help and guidance over an issue which has been
alarming me over the last couple of days. My dilemma is that I have been
dreaming or having nightmares over the death of two people very close to me. I
normally have a peaceful nights sleep and very rarely have dreams up until a
week ago. The two dreams I had were only a few days of each other. In the
dreams I am left crying and there is no one to console me and I lose my mind.
I have
donated money to my local mosque in order to stop this happening again, what
would you suggest I do to avoid a repetition of this kind?
Jazakallah

Answer:
Nightmares Relief
In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask
for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever
He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that
there is no one (no idol, no person, no
grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai,
nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that
Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.
Al-Muwatta Hadith 52.4
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn
Said that Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman said, "I heard Abu Qatada ibn
Ribiyy say that he heard the Messenger of Allah (saws) say, 'The good dream is
from Allah, and the bad dream is from the Shaytan. When you see what you
dislike, spit to your left side three times when you wake up, and seek refuge
with Allah from its evil. It will not harm you then, Allah willing.'" Abu Salama said, "I would see dreams
which weighed on me more heavily than a mountain. When I heard this hadith, I
was not concerned about it."
Beloved Sister in Islam, if you ever experience evil
dreams, rest assured that they are from the Shaytaan. Thus when you see in your dreams what you dislike, take the good
counsel related by the Messenger of Allah (saws) in the above authentic
narration and spit three times on your left side as soon as you wake up and
seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytaan by stating ‘Aoodobillahe minas
Shaytaan ir-rajeem’; it is expected that Allah Subhanah will protect you from
all evil, Insha Allah.
Your
Question: what would you suggest I do to avoid a repetition of this kind?
Fiqh-us-Sunnah 4.119
The Prophet (saws) instructed his Companions
that when they go to bed they should supplicate, "In Your name, O Lord, I
lay me down to sleep. And by Your leave I raise myself up. So if You take away
my soul during sleep, forgive it, and if You keep it alive after sleep protect
it just as You protect Your pious servants."
The Prophet (saws) once advised his daughter,
Fatimah, "Say ‘Subhan-Allah’ thirty three times, ‘Al-hamdu-lillah’ thirty
three times, and ‘Allahu Akbar’ thirty four times." He also commended the
recitation of Surah Al-Falaq, Surah An-Naas, and the
Aayatal-Kursi, the Verse of the Throne, Qur'an
2.255 along with the above supplications, and said that he who does so will
be under the protection of Allah, Who will assign a protector to protect him.
The Prophet (saws) said to Bara, "When
you go to bed make wudu as you do for the regular prayer, and then lie down on
your right side and say, ' O Allah, I surrender my soul to You, and I tum my
face toward You, and I trust my affairs to Your care. I turn to You in fear and
hope. There is no refuge nor any protection against You except in You. I
believe in Your book which You have revealed to Your Prophet whom You
sent'." Then he added, "If you die, you will die in your true nature,
and these words will be your last words."
Dear and Beloved Sister, make wudu before you prepare to
sleep, praise and supplicate Allah Subhanah as taught by the Messenger of Allah
(saws), recite the Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Naas and the verse of Aayatul-Kursi
(2:255) and keep your full trust and faith in none except your Lord Most
Merciful; it is expected that your Lord will protect you from any and all
evils.
Beloved Sister, even if these evil dreams or nightmares
persist, do not let them bother you in the least; disregard them and keep your
full trust and faith in your Lord Most Supreme Alone for He Alone suffices as a
Protector and Helper for those who sincerely believe in Him.
Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to
Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only
Source of Strength.
Your brother and sincere well wisher in Islam,
