Recently, my sister-in-law had similar problems which continued for more then 3 years.
Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,
As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa
Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)
One of our brothers/sisters has asked
this question:
As-salam-walaikum,
I have
read the Q & A below and am not completely convinced. Recently, my
sister-in-law had similar problems which continued for more then 3 years. I did
not belive in any such thing as jinn being able to posess humans. But one day
she started speaking as if she was posessed and she would be fine after we read
verses from the Quran and Ayat-ul-kursi. We were puzzled and took her to an
Imam at a masjid in Saudi Arabia where we found a lot of other such cases. He
would gather all such people and read verses from the Holy Quran. He also gave
water to shower with and oil to aply to the body. Now from what I know, magic
does exist and we can find evidence in the Quran that it is haram. I believe
this is the magic that someone does on others. In fact, this was also done on
our beloved Prophet (SAS) as we know from many ahadith in Sahi Bikhari (Book
54, Hadith 490, Book 71, Hadith 658, 660,664) and many more. Please explain.
Jazak-Allah

Answer:
Jinns possess cure
In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask
for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever
He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that
there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that
Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.
Your Statements: But
one day she started speaking as if she was posessed and she would be fine after
we read verses from the Quran and Ayat-ul-kursi.
The system or nature of this life created by the Lord Most
High is that every person is responsible for the deeds he does with his own
will. If the ‘jinns’ had the power or
could possess someone, then whatever that person does or says, he does not do
or say with his own will but rather it would be the will of the Jinn! If a jinn could posses a human being, he
could murder someone, rape someone, steal something, etc. and make the human
being he has possessed do many an evil deed….and the innocent person could be
held guilty in a court of law and punished for something he did not will to
do!!!! The whole system of life and the
test that the All-Knowing, All-Wise Lord has bestowed would be in total
disarray…and no ones’ life or property would be safe on this earth!
Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 114 Surah
An-Naas verses 4-6:
4 (Say: I seek refuge in
Allah ) from the mischief of the whisperer (of evil) who withdraws
(after his whisper)
5 (The same) who whispers into the hearts
of mankind
6 Among Jinns, and among men.
Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 14 Surah
Ibraheem verse 22:
22 And the Shaytaan (on the Day of Judgment) will say when the matter
is decided: "It was Allah Who gave you a promise of Truth: I too promised,
but I failed in my promise to you. I
had no authority over you except to call you, but ye listened to me:
then reproach not me but reproach your own souls. I cannot listen to your cries nor can ye listen to mine. I reject your former act in associating me
with Allah. For wrongdoers there must
be a Grievous Penalty."
In light of the above absolutely clear guidance of the
Quran, the absolute maximum the Jinn has the power to do is to whisper some
evil into the hearts of men, and inspire and invite man to commit some
evil! They have absolutely no power to
help or hurt any human being, and they absolutely do not possess the power to
possess a human being.
Thus not only is the guidance of the Holy Quran against
the very concept of a jinn possessing a human being, but even logically it is
absolutely impossible for a jinn to possess a human being and make him do his
will!
Dear and beloved brother in Islam, we assure you in light
of the guidance of the Glorious Quran and the Sunnah, that whatever your
sister-in-law experienced had absolutely nothing to do with her being possessed
by a Jinn, for without an iota of a doubt, that is not possible from the clear
guidance of the Glorious Quran and Sunnah….and it is in the Truth of the Quran
and the Sunnah the believers should put their trust and their belief.
Your Statements: We
were puzzled and took her to an Imam at a masjid in Saudi Arabia where we found
a lot of other such cases. He would gather all such people and read verses from
the Holy Quran. He also gave water to shower with and oil to aply to the body.
The wisdom of one who has a physical, or medical, or
psychiatric, or mental problem and seeks a cure for their ailment from the
‘imam’ of a masjid….is like the wisdom of one who wishes to construct a
building but approaches the barber (or a cook, or a doctor, or a driver)!!!! The ‘barber’ may seize this opportunity and
advice one regarding the engineering, architecture, and construction of a
building….but obviously to take his advice rather than the advice or help of a
qualified engineer or architect would defy wisdom!!!!
Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 9 Surah Taubah verses 34-35 :
O you who believe! There are indeed many among the priests and the holy men who
devour the wealth of others by evil means, and debar the people from the Way of
Allah.
Beloved brother, there are many amongst the ‘holy men’ who
have opened up shop and supply remedies of such supposed ‘jinn’ and ‘magic’
related issues…and because they wear the ‘garb’ of Islam, the ignorant amongst
the people assume that the remedies provided by them are prescribed in the Quran
and Sunnah!
Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah
Baqarah verse 79:
Then woe to those who write The Book with their
own hands, and then say, “This is from
Allah”, so that they might gain some
paltry worldly price. This writing of
their hands will bring woe to them, and what they gain thereby will lead to
their ruin!
Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah
Al-Baqarah verse 174:
Indeed those, who conceal the commands that
Allah has sent down in His Book and barter them away for paltry worldly gains, fill
their bellies with fire. Allah
will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He regard them as
pure and there is a painful torment for them!
This supposed ‘imam’ gave you water to shower and oil to
apply as a remedy…others give something else, while others do or say something
else….and the people readily accept whatever these unscrupulous ‘imam’s say,
give, or do in the belief that this remedy is prescribed as a cure for the
evils of ‘jinn’ or ‘magic’ in the Quran and Sunnah….when Allah is our witness,
nothing could be further than that to the Truth!
Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 1019 Narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri
The Prophet (saws) used to seek Allah’s
protection against the ‘Shayateen’ (amongst the Jinns) and the ‘evil eye’
(spells, charms, magic, envy, etc.) till Surahs al-Falaq and an-Naas were
revealed. After they were revealed he
(saws) stuck to them and discarded everything beside them.
If one fears any evil from any quarter of the ‘unseen’,
the Messenger of Allah (saws) guided the believers to recite the 113th
Surah Al-Falaq and the 114th Surah An-Naas and thus seek refuge in
their Lord Most High; for Allah Alone more than suffices as a Protector and a
Helper.
If one does use the water, or the oil, or any other
supposed ‘cure’ given by the evil and unscrupulous imams as a remedy for their
fear ….. as your sincere brothers and well-wishers in faith, we caution you in
light of the Quran and the Sunnah, that to believe that these supposed
self-invented ‘antidotes’ or ‘potions’ or ‘lotions’ or ‘spells’ or ‘charms’ or
‘amulets’, etc. given by some ‘holy men’ have the power to protect or ward of
the evil of the unseen, is approaching the very thresholds of what is deemed as
manifest ‘shirk’ and ‘kufr’ in the Sight of Allah Subhanah!
It is reported from
Ibn Mas'ud that once, when he entered his home, he noticed his wife wearing a
knotted object round her neck. He took
it away and broke it. Then he remarked: 'The family of Abdullah has become so
arrogant that they now associate with Allah those for whom He has sent down no
authority.' I have heard the Messenger
of Allah (saws) saying: 'Verily, incantations, amulets, and love charms
are acts of shirk (associating gods with Allah).' The people said: 'O Abu Abdullah! We are familiar with incantations and
amulets, but what is a love charm (altawlah)'?' He replied: 'It is a sort of ‘formula’ by which women sought to
gain their husbands' love'." (Related by Al-Hakim and Ibn Hibban).
Imran ibn Hasin
reports that the Messenger of Allah (saws) saw a man wearing a bracelet of
copper on his arm. The Prophet (saws)
exclaimed to him: 'Woe be to you!'
What is this? ' The man
replied: 'I am suffering from weakness (al-wahinah).' (Al-wahinah is a disease
that causes pain in the shoulders and hands. The man was wearing a copper
bracelet believing it would relieve his pain and suffering). The Prophet (saws) prohibited him from
wearing it because he regarded it as an amulet. The Prophet (saws)
said: 'It will give you nothing
but pain. Throw it away. Had you died while wearing it, you
would never have achieved salvation! (ie. you would have died in the
state of the unforgivable sin of ‘shirk’'" (Narrated by Ahmad)
Your Statement: Now
from what I know, magic does exist and we can find evidence in the Quran that
it is haram
Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah
Baqarah verse 102:
102 They followed what the Shayateen gave out (falsely) against the
power of Solomon; the blasphemers were not Solomon but the Shayateen teaching
men magic and such things as came down at Babylon to the Angels Harut and
Marut. But neither of these (Angels)
taught anyone (such things) without saying: "We are only for trial so do
not blaspheme." They learned from them the means to sow discord between
man and wife. But they could not thus harm anyone except by Allah's
permission. And they learned what
harmed them not what profited them. And
they knew that the buyers of (magic) would have no share in the happiness of
the Hereafter. And vile was the price
for which they did sell their souls if they but knew!
Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 7 Surah
Aaraaf verses 116-118:
116 Said Moses: "Throw ye (first)." So when they (the magicians) threw, they bewitched the eyes of
the people and struck terror into them: for they showed a great (feat of)
magic.
117 We put it into Moses's mind by inspiration: "throw (now) thy
rod": and behold! It swallows up
straightway all the falsehoods which they fake!
118 Thus Truth was confirmed and all that
they did was made of no effect.
According to the guidance of the Quran, there are two
types of magic.
Thus to answer the question if ‘magic exists’, the answer
in light of the guidance of the above absolutely clear guidance of the Quran
would be ‘yes’!
Beloved Brother, the first thing we, as believers, must
understand that those who claim to do magic do not have the power to hurt or
benefit anyone, without the permission of Allah Subhanah. No harm and no benefit can happen to the
believer without the Will of Allah Subhanah.
If Allah does not will it, all the magicians of the world can get together
and try their magic on someone, they cannot harm him in the least!; for Absolutely
All Power and All Strength belongs to none save Allah Subhanah Alone!
Allah Says in His Holy Quran Chapter 35 Surah
Fatir verse 2:
2 What Allah out of His Mercy doth bestow on mankind there is none can
withhold: what He doth withhold there is none can grant apart from Him: and He
is the Exalted in Power Full of Wisdom.
Your Statement: that
it is haram
Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 3656 Narrated by Abu Musa al-Ash'ari
The Prophet (saws) said, "There are
three who will not enter Paradise: one who is addicted to wine, one who breaks
ties of relationship, and one who does (or believes in the effects of)
magic."
To perform ‘magic’ is absolutely forbidden in Islam, and
is akin to ‘kufr’ and disbelief in Allah and His Messenger (saws).
Your Question: In
fact, this was also done on our beloved Prophet (SAS) as we know from many
ahadith in Sahi Bikhari (Book 54, Hadith 490, Book 71, Hadith 658, 660,664) and
many more. Please explain.
There is indeed an incident related in the authentic
narrations by Hadrat Aisha (r.a.), the wife of the Prophet (saws), whereby she
narrates the incident of the magic that was done on the Messenger of Allah
(saws), to the effect that he (saws) used to think that he had done something
which in fact he did not do. Allah
Subhanah informed the Prophet (saws) of the magic and its source, and protected
him from its effect.
Sahih Al-Bukhari
Hadith 8.400 Narrated by Aisha
that Allah's
Messenger (saws) was affected by magic, so much so that he used to think
that he had done something which in fact, he did not do, and he invoked
his Lord (for a remedy). Then (one day)
he (saws) said, "O 'Aisha! Do you
know that Allah has advised me as to the problem I consulted Him about?" 'Aisha
said, "O Allah's Messenger (saws)! What's that?" He (saws) said, "Two men came to me and
one of them sat at my head and the other at my feet, and one of them asked his
companion, 'What is wrong with this man?'
The latter replied, 'He is under the effect of magic.' The former asked, 'Who has worked magic on
him?' The latter replied, 'Labid bin
Al-A'sam.' The former asked, 'With what
did he work the magic?' The latter
replied, 'With a comb and the hair, which are stuck to the comb, and the skin
of pollen of a date-palm tree.' The
former asked, 'Where is that?' The latter
replied, 'It is in Dharwan.' "
Dharwan was a well in the dwelling place of the (tribe of) Bani
Zuraiq. Allah's Messenger (saws) went
to that well and returned to 'Aisha, saying, "By Allah, the water (of the
well) was as red as the infusion of Hinna, and the date-palm trees look like
the heads of devils." Aisha added,
"Allah's Messenger (saws) came to me and informed me about the well. I asked the Prophet (saws), 'O Allah's
Messenger (saws), why didn't you take out the skin of pollen?' He (saws) said, 'As for me, Allah has
cured me and I hated to draw the attention of the people to such evil.'"
The one and only remedy one requires when one fears magic
is to recite the Muawidaat (113th Surah Al-Falaq and 114th
Surah An-Naas) thus seeking refuge in Allah from any and all evil. Other than seeking refuge in Allah by
reciting the Muawidaat, one need not do or say anything else, for indeed Allah
Subhanah Alone is more than Sufficient and Able as a Protector and Helper. If one seeks any other protection by doing
anything else like tying a knot on a rope, wearing an amulet, or shedding
blood, or taking shower with some ‘special’ water, or applying a ‘special’ oil
or lotion, or any other rite or ritual as a protection against the fear of the
evil of magic….they will be deemed seeking protection from something or someone
other than Allah Subhanah; and such an act would be tantamount to the
unforgivable and heinous crime of ‘shirk’ in the Sight of the Lord.
If one seeks protection from any quarter of the ‘unseen’,
all one needs to do is recite the Muawwedaat (the 113th Surah
Al-Falaq and the 114th Surah An-Naas) and seek refuge in their Lord
Most High. Once the believer recites
the Muawwedaat, keeps his full faith and trust in the Power and Strength of his
Lord Most High Alone, and declares himself to be in the refuge of none save the
Lord Most Majestic, Allah is our witness brother, if all the magicians and all
the Jinns of the universe were to get together and try to harm someone in the
‘unseen’, they would not be able to harm him in the least whatsoever without
the Will of Allah Subhanah! All
Strength and all Power is with none save Allah Subhanah, The Lord of the Worlds
Alone.
If one trusts, obeys, and follows the guidance and
commands of Allah and His Messenger (saws),
one can be assured of never ever being misled; but if one believes, obeys and follows any other guidance, other
than that of Allah and His Messenger (saws), one can be assured of being led
astray.
Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to
Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only
Source of Strength.

well wisher in Islam,
