Is it haram if you lie to your current employer to take a day or an afternoon off to go to a job interview
Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,
As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa
Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)
One of our brothers/sisters has asked
this question:
Is it
haram if you lie to your current employer to take a day or an afternoon off to
go to a job interview in case you are looking into getting another job?
Obviously, you can`t tell the employer that you are going to be late to work
since you have to be somewhere else for a job interview
(There may be some grammatical and spelling
errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from
questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in

Answer:
Lie Liar
In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask
for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever
He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that
there is no one (no idol, no person, no
grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai,
nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that
Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.
Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 4 Surah
Nisaa verse 135:
135 O ye who believe! Stand out
firmly for justice (and Truth) as witnesses to Allah even as against
yourselves or your parents or your kin and whether it be (against) rich
or poor: for Allah can best protect both.
Follow not the lusts (of your hearts) lest ye swerve and if ye distort
(justice and truth) or decline to do justice; verily Allah is well-acquainted
with all that ye do.
Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chatper 5 Surah
Maidah verse 8:
8 O ye who believe! Stand
out firmly for Allah as witnesses to fair dealing and let not the
hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is next to Piety: and
fear Allah for Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do.
Dear and beloved brother in Islam, the religion of Truth
guides those who have professed belief in Allah and the Last Day to always, and
we reiterate, always fear Allah and stand on the side of the Truth, even if
that truth is against oneself, one’s interests, or against one’s loved
ones.
It would neither behove nor befit nor would it be in
alignment with the character of a believer, who sincerely believes in Allah and
the Last Day, to utter a lie….and that too for a paltry worldly gain or
benefit.
If one wishes to go for a job-interview, one should either
ask permission from their employer to be excused for that time, or ask the
one’s interviewing if they could set up the interview which does not conflict
with your present work timings. But to
tell a lie to someone only so that one may hope of obtaining any material
benefit for oneself would definitely be unlawful and illegal in Islam and a sin
in the Sight of Allah Subhanah, and just not consonant with the character of
one who believes in Allah and the Last Day.
Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 8.116 Narrated by Abdullah
The Prophet (saws) said, "Truthfulness
leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to
Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to
Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only
Source of Strength.

well wisher in Islam,
