One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Assalamualaikum, Brother Burhan, I have a question to ask which has made me upset a lot. I was involved in a relationship with a girl named "H" which was over 2 years back, presently I am married with another one and I am happy. today I dont know what made me tell three times the word of talaq to my previous girl friend( I only had this girl in mind while telling these words "H") to whom I had never married " H",.. so the question is .. by telling these words is my present married in trouble??

Kindly reply me since this means a lot to me .. MAY ALLAH FORGIVE ME

Answer:

Divorce thought

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person,  no grave, no prophet,  no imam,  no dai,  nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: by telling these words is my present married in trouble??

Firstly, a thought of giving divorce without proper and specific verbal or written declaration of divorce does not constitute a legal divorce in Islam.

Secondly, it is absolutely obvious that it was never your intention to divorce your wife when you in your thoughts declared ‘divorce’ to sister ‘H’; thus rest assured that whatever transpired in your thoughts have absolutely no bearings whatsoever on the legality of your marriage with your present wife.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
