Work for bank
Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,
As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa
Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)
One of our brothers/sisters has asked
this question:
Dear Brother Burhan,
I am an 18 year old girl working with my dad
as an administrator in a company where he is a General Manager. The money that
I am being paid is from gaming machines which I think is not a very good source
because it might not have Allah`s rahmah although I am working for a branch of
the company and not that particular. I have nothing to do with the machines. I
am handling the accounts of a dry fruit store and the administration of the
office I work in.
My question is if I am offered a job in the
bank as a Call Centre Representative, can I take the job/ is it halal? Or I am
better in this job? I am very confused as other than this present job I can get
only that job. I would appreciate if you could clear my doubts and give me a
clearer picture. And another important thing is I would personally prefer to
take up such a job but I want a view on it in the light of Islam, whether I am
permitted to work in a call centre for a bank or is that Haram.
Thanks a lot for your time.

Answer:
Work for bank
In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask
for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever
He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that
there is no one (no idol, no person, no
grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai,
nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that
Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.
May Allah Subhanah reward you with the best of this world
and the Hereafter for your kind comments of encouragement for our humble efforts
in the propagation of the Truth. If
our humble and modest efforts have helped even one brother or sister get closer
to Allah and His Deen of Truth, then we would consider ourselves indeed
fortunate to have been given this opportunity by the Lord Most Merciful to
serve in His Cause. We hope, beg,
and pray the Merciful Lord
accepts our humble and weak efforts,
forgives us our shortcomings, and
saves you, us, and all the believers
from the torment of the Hell Fire.
Ameen.
Dear and Beloved Sister in Islam, if your current job at
the dry fruit store has nothing to do with the workings of the gaming company
which owns it, your earnings will be considered lawful and halaal in the sight
of Shariah. Although the prospect of
taking the Call Centre job in a conventional bank would not directly involve
you in the haraam of ‘riba’, it would definitely involve you in a job that
facilitates the concept of ‘riba’.
Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 3327 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud
The Messenger of Allah (saws) invoked the
curse of Allah on the one who accepted ‘riba’, the one who paid it, the witness
to it, and the one who recorded it.
Thus, in our humble opinion, if these two are the only
choices available to you at this time, your present job at the dry fruit store
would definitely be purer and safer in the sight of Shariah. If you decline the job offer from the bank
only because you fear Allah and the Last Day and wish to stay away from the
‘haraam’, not only will you receive a huge reward from Allah Subhanah in the
Hereafter, but it is expected that Allah Subhanah would open other
opportunities for you in the life of this world and provide for you in
abundance from His Unlimited and Infinite Bounties.
Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s
Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only
Source of Strength.
Your Brother in Islam,
Burhan
