Why more women than men in hell?

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

I have heard that there will be more women in hell than men. Is this because women commit more sins than men? Or is it because the population of women will be greater than men towards the day of resurrection?

(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer:

Why more women than men in hell?

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person,  no grave, no prophet,  no imam,  no dai,  nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

The answer to your question was posed to the Messenger of Allah (saws) and this was his (saws) reply:

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 1.28 Narrated by Ibn Abbas

The Prophet (saws) said: "I was shown the Hell-fire and that the majority of its dwellers were women who were ungrateful." It was asked, "Do they disbelieve in Allah?" (or are they ungrateful to Allah?)  He (saws) replied, "They are ungrateful to their husbands and are ungrateful for the favors and the good (charitable deeds) done to them.  If you have always been good (benevolent) to one of them, and then she sees something in you (not of her liking), she will say, 'I have never received any good from you."

If one analyses the condition of the human being, one will realize that it is actually much more easier for a woman to reach Paradise than men.  Allah Subhanah has laid several responsibilities on the man according to his nature; but for the woman she has only two major duties, which if fulfilled, she will attain Paradise:

Obedience and worship of Allah Subhanah

Earn the pleasure of her husband.

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 286         Narrated by Umm Salamah

The Prophet (saws) said: “If a woman dies while her husband was pleased with her, she will enter Paradise.”

Islam has paid tremendous importance to the formation and sanctity of the family and has commanded the believing woman to be obedient and grateful to her husband, so that this sanctity of family may be maintained.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 4 Surah Nisaa verse 34:Men are the protectors and maintainers of women because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means.  Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard.

The Messenger of Allah (saws) in stating that he (saws) saw more women in Hell Fire, forewarns the believing woman to be careful of her duties towards her husband; for this duty is so supreme in the sight of the Creator, that if unfulfilled, it may result in her entry to the Hell Fire.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
