Feel something at night

Mu'meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

I would like to know at nite when I sleep despite reciting my Kalimah and Aaayatul Kursi and making thikr before I sleep how come there are times when I feel a presence, like something heavy which comes to lie on top of me, I immediately start reciting and then I can actually feel the thing sliding away from me - what is this and how can I make it go away? It happens several times over time?

Answer:

Feel something at night

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person,  no grave, no prophet,  no imam,  no dai,  nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

This feeling in indeed experienced by some people who sleep on their backs, which effects one’s breathing.  When one wakes up after sleeping a long period on one’s back, it seems that one becomes immovable, or feels as if there is some weight kept on them.  This condition has more to do with one’s sleeping position, rather than anything else.

The Messenger of Allah (saws) himself used to sleep on his side (right side), and advised the believers to do the same.  If you follow this Sunnah position of sleeping,  Insha Allah,  it will eliminate the condition of feeling heavy when you wake up.

Continue reciting the Aayat-ul-Kursi, and the two ‘Quls’ (113th and 114th Surahs of the Quran),  and continue doing the ‘dhikr’ or remembrance of Allah Subhanah before you go to sleep;  as that is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws).   And be assured that the heaviness when getting up is not an act of some ‘invisible’ being,  but it is a condition resulting from one’s sleeping position.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother in Islam,

Burhan
