Meaning of name "Talha" whom Prophet (pbuh) called the "Living Martyr".

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Salaam Alaikum Burhan Bhai,

Hope you are doing fine. Al Hamdullilah, we are expecting a baby boy soon. We plan to name him "Talha" after Talha Bin Obaidullah, whom Prophet (PBUH) called the "Living Martyr". I would appreciate if you could tell the meaning of Talha. Appreciate if you answer this soon. JazakAllah Khair.

Answer:

Meaning of name Talha

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person,  no grave, no prophet,  no imam,  no dai,  nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

The term Talha in the Arabic language literally means a very big tree.

Talha is indeed a very beautiful and good name for a believer, named after one of the closest companions of the Messenger of Allah (saws), Hadrat Talha bin Obaidullah (r.a.), whom indeed the Prophet (saws) called the ‘living martyr’;  but we must understand that not all names have a meaning.  Even names such as Nuh,  or Ibraheem,  or Haroon,  or Yunus, etc. have no particular meaning in the Arabic language;  but all are considered good and valid names for believers,  because of the pious personality they are named after from the rich and vast history of Islam.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
