Answer:
Smoking during fasting
In the name of Allah, We praise
Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none
can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright.
We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam,
no dai, nobody!) worthy of
worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His
slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.
Allah Says in the Holy
Quran Chapter 7 Surah Aaraaf verse 157: (Mercy is now assigned to) Those who follow the Messenger,
the unlettered Prophet, whom
they find mentioned in their own (Scriptures); in the law and the Gospel; for
he commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil: he allows them as
lawful what is good (and pure) and prohibits them from what is bad (and
impure); He releases them from their heavy burdens and from the yokes
that are upon them. So it is those who
believe in him, honor him, help him,
and follow the light which is sent down with him, it is they who will prosper."
Beloved brother in Islam, we will try to abstain from quoting to you
any ‘fatwa’ from any human being in answering your question, Insha Allah.
Cigarette smoking was obviously
not available at the time of the Revelation of the Holy Quran; thus the Quran and the Sunnah are obviously
silent on this particular and specific issue of smoking! But if one uses his intelligence and power
of reasoning, he will realize that in
light of the clear guidance and teachings of the Holy Quran, Allah Subhanah has made all the good things
(tayyebaat) lawful, and all the impure things (khabaaith) unlawful; and the whole human race is unanimous in
their opinion that smoking is indeed a ‘khabaaith’ or evil habit!
When Allah and His Messenger
(saws) have not declared a particular and specific thing haraam; no person has a right to call it
haraam; but there should be no doubt in
the mind of any believer that cigarette smoking is a ‘khabaaith’ and an evil
habit to say the least!
Your Question: Will you please let me know in the light of Quran if smoking is prohibited during fasting?
Allah Says in the Holy
Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verse 187: Permitted to you on
the night of the fasts is the approach to your wives. They are your garments.
And ye are their garments. Allah
knoweth what ye used to do secretly among yourselves; but He turned to you and
forgave you; so now associate with them and seek what Allah hath ordained for
you and eat and drink until the white thread of dawn appear to you
distinct from its black thread; then complete your fast till the night appears;
but do not associate with your wives while ye are in retreat in the
mosques. Those are limits (set by)
Allah; approach not nigh thereto. Thus
doth Allah make clear His signs to men that they may learn self-restraint.
Allah has declared it halaal for
the believers to eat and drink of the ‘tayyebaat’ or good and pure things on
normal days. And as a test for the
believers, even these halaal foods and
drinks are forbidden in the state and times of one’s fast!
When even the halaal is
prohibited to the believers in their state of fasting; can any believer, who sincerely fears Allah and the Last Day, believe even for a second that a ‘khabaaith’
of the likes of smoking, which is not
allowed even in normal times, would be
allowed during fasts?
Whatever written of Truth and
benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error
is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He
is the Only Source of Strength.
Your Brother in
Islam,
