Hate people who commit shirk
Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,
As Salaam Aleikum wa
Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be
upon all of you)
One of our
brothers/sisters has asked this question:
Are we justified in hating Christians and for that matter any non-muslims (Jews, Hindus etc) because of the difference in our beleifs. It seems there are are verses in Quran that ask us to hate people who are making shirk with Allah SWT
(There may be some grammatical and spelling
errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from
questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in
confidentiality.)
Answer:
In the name of Allah, We praise
Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can
misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We
bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no
imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah
Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the
seal of His Messengers.
Islam does not allow the
believers to hate someone simply because of the difference in their
beliefs. Allah Subhanah
Himself is the Creator of all mankind; and He, in His Supreme and Infinite
Wisdom and Knowledge created everything that exists.
Allah says in the Holy
Quran: Chapter 49 Surah Hujurat verse 13:O mankind, We
created you from one man and one woman, and then divided you into nations and
tribes so that you may recognize one another.
Indeed, the most honorable among you in the sight of Allah is he who is
the most pious of you. Surely Allah is
All-Knowing, All-Wise.
He it is Who gave human beings
the faculty of intelligence and the free will for a limited time as a test, to
choose whatever path he wishes to take for his salvation. If the person uses his intelligence, and of
his own free will chooses to follow the guidance chosen and revealed by Allah Subhanah, he passes the test of life. If the individual denies the guidance
revealed by Allah, and formulates any other path other than the path chosen by
Allah, he fails in the test. No one can
be forced to believe…
the person has to exercise his own intelligence and his free will
in determining the path of truth.
Allah says in the Holy
Quran in Chapter 67 Surah
Al Mulk verse 2:He (Allah)
created death and life that He may test you, to see which of you is the best in
deeds.
The Quran
does warn the believers about some people who will hate them for their
beliefs. It specifically says that
they are the ones who will hold enmity with the believers, rather than the
other way around. And the history of
mankind is sufficient proof of this Truth from the Lord of the Worlds!
Allah says in the Holy
Quran Chapter 5 Surah Maidah verse 82:You (the
believers) will find that the most hostile of all people in their enmity to the
Believers are the Jews and the ‘mushriks’
(polytheists); and you will find that the nearest in friendliness to the
Believers are those who say, “We are
Christians.” This is because there are
among them some pious scholars and monks, and because they are free from pride.
Yes, the Quran
does say that one should not take as close friends those dis-believers
who fight against the believers in the matter of the deen. But taking them as close friends is one
thing, and having enmity with them is another.
Nowhere does the Quran say that the believers
are to hate, or hold enmity, or oppress, or break atrocities on someone, just
because his beliefs are different from Islam.
The Quran always guides towards justice and
equal well being of all mankind; whether their beliefs are same as the
believers or different.
Allah says in the Holy
Quran Chapter 60 Surah Mumtahinah verses 8-9:Allah does
not forbid you to treat kindly and act equitably towards those who have neither
fought you in the matter of religion, nor driven you out of your homes. Indeed, Allah loves those who are just. He only forbids you to take for friends
those who have fought you in the matter of religion, and have driven you out of
your homes, and have co-operated with others in your expulsion. Those who take them for friends are indeed
the wrongdoers.
It is the duty of every believer
to be kind, equitable and just to all mankind. The Quran was
revealed as a Mercy and Blessing for mankind, not to sow enmity between
people! If one truly obeys, follows and
acts according to the principles of the Quran towards
the disbelievers, it
is expected that the person will be inclined towards the high morals of the
believer and might recognize the Truth of Islam. Only if we are kind, equitable and just
according to the clear guidance and teachings of the Quran,
will we ever be able to invite those who do not believe in Allah and the Last
Messenger (saws) to this beautiful deen of Islam.
Whatever written of Truth and
benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error
is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He
is the Only Source of Strength.
Your Brother in Islam,
