Shaitaan, Adam & stoning of the three shaitaans during Hajj

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Brother, in reply to the question of one of your readers - when will the Dictatorship of the Syedna end ? you have elaborately narrated various Ayats of  Quran. Be it as it may,  in blind faith, it is possible for any one to believe in  any thing.  As a reader I have expressed my views - that before the Will of  Kudrat man has to bow down. In the Quran there is description of Shaitan as  well as the glories of Maulana Adam Saheb. Shaitan was the Munkir of Maulana  Adam Saheb. You must be aware that Maulana Adam Saheb in this belief did not narrate Aauzo Billah for him.  Nabi Mohammad (saws) during his time started  the system of Aauzo, but will it be possible to know who was the shaitan at  that time ? According to Quran the Munafiq of Nabi Adam is described as  Shaitan, but was there any subject of his Baraat or Laanat at that time. I shall be thankful if you would let me know. There is narration of the two  sons of Nabi Adam - Haabil and Kaabil. But there is no narration in the  Quran of Kaabil being misguided by Shaitan.

In the belief, - the manasik e haj -  there are three stones in Macca as Symbols of Shaitan and all the Hajis throw stones at them. Has these stones  misguided any of the Momins or has harmed any one ? You or any one else who  is aware of it may please clarify. 14 hundred years have passed and there  have been lacs of Hajis - but are these three stones destroyed ?

Therefore who can destroy the Najmi Dayee ? I have only expressed my views.  If it has hurt any ones feeling I may be pardoned.

Answer:

Shaitaan, Adam & stoning of the three shaitaans during  Hajj

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your comment: Shaitan was the Munkir of Maulana  Adam Saheb. You must be aware that Maulana Adam Saheb in his belief did not  narrate Aauzo Billah for him.  Nabi Mohammad (saws) during his time started  the system of Aauzo, but will it be possible to know who was the shaitan at  that time ?

A Jinn named Iblees refused to obey the command of Allah and thus became a ‘shaitaan’.   Prophet Mohamed (saws) did not start the system by himself of ‘aoozobillah’ (I seek refuge in Allah), but rather Allah commanded Prophet Mohamed (saws) to say these words in the Holy Quran.   Similarly Prophet Adam (a.s.) also said what Allah taught him.

In light of the Holy Quran, the ‘shaitaans’ is anyone who disobeys the commands and guidance of Allah; and they can be from among the Jinns as well as the human beings.

If you are perchance asking the names of the ‘shayaateen’ at the time of Prophet Mohamed (saws), there was not one, but many, who sided with the ‘shaitaan’ and opposed the mission of the Messenger of Allah (saws).   Allah Alone knows them and their count.

Your comment: According to Quran the Munafiq of Nabi Adam is described as  Shaitan, but was there any subject of his Baraat or Laanat at that time. I shall be thankful if you would let me know.

A ‘munafiq’ in Islam, is a hypocrite who verbally professes that He believes in Allah and the Messenger (saws),  but deep in his heart he does not believe and holds animosity with Islam.    The Quran does not call Iblees a ‘munafiq’,  but has rather termed him a Shaitaan who dis-obeyed the command of Allah Subhanah due to his pride.  Thus Allah declared ‘baraat’ with Iblees and threw him out, and cursed (laanah)  Iblees the Shaitaan and he shall remain under that ‘laanah’ forever.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 15 Surah Hijr verses 29-35:

29      "When I have fashioned him (in due proportion) and breathed into him of My spirit fall ye down in obeisance unto him."

30      So the angels prostrated themselves all of them together:

31      Not so Iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated themselves.

32      (Allah) said: "O Iblis! what is your reason for not being among those who prostrated themselves?"

33      (Iblis) said: "I am not one to prostrate myself to man whom thou didst create from sounding clay from mud molded into shape."

34      (Allah) said: "Then get thee out from here; for thou art rejected accursed.

35      "And the Curse shall be on thee till the Day of Judgment."

Your comment: There is narration of the two  sons of Nabi Adam - Haabil and Kaabil. But there is no narration in the Quran of Kaabil being misguided by Shaitan.

Allah does mention the story of the two sons of Prophet Adam (a.s.),  Haabil and Kaabil,  but neither are mentioned by name in the Quran.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 5 Surah Maidah verses 27-31:

27      Recite to them the truth of the story of the two sons of Adam. Behold! they each presented a sacrifice (to Allah): it was accepted from one but not from the other.  Said the latter: "Be sure I will slay thee."  "Surely" said the former "Allah doth accept of the sacrifice of those who are righteous.

28      "If thou dost stretch thy hand against me to slay me it is not for me to stretch my hand against thee to slay thee: for I do fear Allah the Cherisher of the worlds.

29      "For me I intend to let thee draw on thyself my sin as well as thine for thou wilt be among the companions of the fire and that is the reward of those who do wrong."

30      The (selfish) soul of the other led him to the murder of his brother: he murdered him and became (himself) one of the lost ones.

31      Then Allah sent a raven who scratched the ground to show him how to hide the shame of his brother.  "Woe is me!" said he: "Was I not even able to be as this raven and to hide the shame of my brother?" Then he became full of regrets.

It is understood in the light of the Quran that anyone who does any deed which is displeasing to Allah is done under the guidance of Shaitaan.    Kaabeel murdered his righteous brother Habeel unjustly at the instigation of Shaitaan and became among the wrong-doers.

Allah and His Messenger (saws) taught the believers to perform the pilgrimage and all the rites of Hajj.   The stoning of the three shaitaans is indeed a part of the rites of Hajj, and are done only as a commemoration and remembrance of the Great Sacrifice of Prophet Abraham (a.s.).    Prophet Abraham (a.s.) was commanded by Allah in a dream to slaughter his beloved son Prophet Ismaeel (a.s.) as a sacrifice to Allah as a test.   Prophet Abraham (a.s.) took his son and laid him on the ground near the first stone and tried to slaughter him.   The Shaitaan came to Prophet Abraham (a.s.) and tried to talk him out of this, and Prophet Abraham recognized the Shaitaan and threw a few stones at him to drive him away.    He then went to the second place and again the Shaitaan appeared and again he threw some stones and drove him away.  The same thing happened at the third stone and after Prophet Abraham (a.s.) drove the Shaitaan away again and prepared to slaughter his beloved son for Allah; Allah commanded that this was only a test for Prophet Abraham (a.s.) from Allah, which he had passed.   Then Allah commanded Prophet Abraham (a.s.) to slaughter a sheep instead of his son.

These acts of Prophet Abraham (a.s.) of throwing the stones and being ready to slaughter his own son for the Pleasure of Allah were so pleasing to Allah, that Allah honored the name and actions of Prophet Abraham (a.s.) until the Day of Judgement and made these acts part of rituals or the manasiks of Hajj.

Thus, it is not as if the Shaitaan resides in these stones or that these stones go out and harm someone!   And also, the stones that we see today were not there at the time of the Prophet (saws).  These were built and rebuilt by the muslims many times over the years.  It is nothing but a remembrance and a commemoration of the Great Sacrifice of Prophet Abraham (a.s.).

I really did not understand what you were trying to ask or prove here by drawing a parallel with the three stones of Shaitaan and the Najmi Dayees?   Would appreciate if you could make your questions specific so that we can provide an answer to you.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
