What does “Innama Ashku Bassi Wa Huzni Elallah” mean?

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and who-ever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

 

The meaning of the words are: “I complain to Allah Alone for my sorrow and grief.”

 

The above words are from aayah 86, Chapter 12, Surah Yusuf of the Holy Quran.   These words were utterred by the Prophet Yaqoob (a.s.) when his sons told him that in his grief for Prophet Yusuf (a.s.), he would hurt of kill himself.  That’s when Prophet Yaqoob (a.s.) said the above words in total submission to Allah Subhanah alone.

 

I want to use this opportunity and clarify the difference between a ‘tasbeeh’ and a ‘dua’.  ‘Tasbeeh’ basically means to praise and glorify Allah and declare that He is Exalted and Pure and Above everything else in creation. There is absolutely nothing like unto Him in the whole Universe.   ‘Tasbeeh’ is Allah’s remembrance and ‘dhikr’ in praise and awe of His Majesty and His Power.  And the best ‘tasbeeh’ is to declare that Allah is far Exalted above the ‘shirk’ the ignorant people commit.

 

Allah says regarding ‘tasbeeh’ in the Holy Quran Chapter 64 Surah Taghabun verse 1: Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth is doing ‘tasbeeh’(glorifying)  to Allah.   His is the Sovereignty and His the Praise, and He has power over everything.

 

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 61 Surah Saff verse 1: Whatever is in the heavens and the earth is doing ‘tasbeeh’ (glorifying) to Allah.   He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.

 

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 62 Surah Jumuah verse 1: Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth does ‘tasbeeh’ (glorifies) to Allah.   The Sovereign, The Holy, The All-Mighty and The All-Wise.

 

Thus ‘tasbeeh’ in light and guidance of the Holy Quran means to glorify and praise Allah and declare that He is Exalted and Above everything in creation. We have taken ‘tasbeeh’ to mean repeating a set of words on a rosary bead like some ‘jantar-mantar’ to get blessings and remove calamities, and this is absolutely the wrong meaning and connotation of the term ‘tasbeeh’.

 

 When a muslim finds himself in a trial from His Lord, he should make a supplication or dua to Allah Alone.   He should make these duas and pleas for help in all humility, and beg Allah Alone to remove the calamities that have befallen him, with the belief that there is no one else who can remove his trials.   He should be confident in his belief that it is Allah Alone who has all the Power to give and it is Allah Alone who has the absolute Power to take away whatever He wants.  He knows and believes that if Allah wills to give him something, no power and no combination of people can stop that blessing coming to him; and if Allah wills to take away something from him, no power and no combination of people can stop Allah from taking it.   All the other beings are helpless in front of Allah’s Will and thus it is Allah Alone on whom the believers must put their trust.  That would be a true servant and slave of Allah.

 

Just repeating a set of words on a set of rosary beads will never get the desired effect with Allah!  One must supplicate Allah with all his heart and soul, for Allah is closer to us than our jugular veins!   He answers our prayers when we call on Him.  He is nearer to us than our own shadows in His knowledge, and He is Kind and Merciful towards his creation.   To Allah we belong and to Allah is our ultimate return.
