Why recite surah yaa seen for dying.

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

My dad passed away recently, he was unconscious for 2 days and then passed away on the 3rd day. I have Surah Yaseen on my phone, we would play Surah Yaseen and place the mobile near his ear. My brother recited the Adhaan in his ear, also. My question is: That when someone is dying and he is unconscious - people say it is good for him to listen to the Adhaan or any Surah? Please tell me why?

Answer:

Why recite surah yaa seen for dying

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: …That when someone is dying and he is unconscious - people say it is good for him to listen to the Adhaan or any Surah? Please tell me why?

It is narrated from Hadrat Abu ad-Darda (r.a.) and Hadrat Abu Dharr al-Ghaffari (r.a.) that the Messenger of Allah (saws) said: 'If any person is on his deathbed and the Surah Yaa-Seen is recited to him, Allah makes his suffering easier'.

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2178        Narrated by Ma'qil ibn Yasar al-Muzani

The Prophet (saws) said, "If anyone recites Surah Yaa-Seen out of a desire for Allah's Favor, his past sins will be forgiven him; so recite it over those of you who are dying."

It is indeed from amongst the preferred Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws) to recite the blessed Surah Yaa-Seen to one who is on his death-bed or nearing death; it is expected that the suffering of their advent of death will be made easier for them by the Lord Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

To the best of our knowledge there is absolutely no evidence in the authentic and established Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws) to recite or declare the Adhaan or call to prayer for one who is dying or on their death-bed.  And Allah Alone Knows Best.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
