Answer:

Restrictions during menstruation

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verse 222:

222    They ask thee (O Prophet (saws)) concerning women's courses (menstruation).  Say: ‘They are a hurt and a pollution; so keep away from women in their courses and do not approach (have sexual intercourse with) them until they are clean.  But when they have purified themselves ye may approach them in any manner, time, or place ordained for you by Allah.  For Allah loves those who turn to Him constantly and He loves those who keep themselves pure and clean.

It is absolutely unlawful and forbidden for the husband to have full sexual intercourse with his wife who is experiencing her menstruation until she has purified herself from her ceremonial impurity.  If the wife is experiencing her monthly menstruation, or the period after child-birth,  there is absolutely no harm and no sin if the husband and wife enjoy each other’s physical and even intimate company….  playing,  touching,  fondling, etc.   The guidance of the Messenger of Allah (saws) on this subject is that the woman in menses must cover her private parts, and the husband and wife may enjoy intimacy except the act of actual sexual intercourse.

The Messenger of Allah (saws) said, "Do everything (during the woman’s menstruation) except intercourse." (Related by Muslim, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood)

There is absolutely nothing in the Shariah which prohibits the believers from interacting with their wives during their menstruations (normal or post child-birth); other than the act of actual sexual intercourse during the menstruation periods, one is at complete liberty to enjoy their wife’s company as they will and please.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 1.298         Narrated by Aisha

The Prophet (saws) and I used to take a bath from a single pot while we were ‘Junub’ (state of major impurity). During my menses, he (saws) used to order me to put on an ‘Izar’ (dress worn below the waist) and he (saws) used to fondle me. While in ‘Itikaf’ (seclusion in the Masjid in Ramadan), he (saws) used to bring his head near me and I would wash it while I used to be in my state of menstruation.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
