Convert children to Islam and name change

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Peace and Blessings!

I have a question...If I wanted to convert my children to Islam even though they never were baptised is it too late?  Also, how do you apply for an official name change?

(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer:

Convert children to Islam and name change

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His  forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol,  no person,  no grave, no prophet,  no imam,  no dai,  nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Q-1:  If I wanted to convert my children to Islam even though they never were baptised is it too late?

Whether one is baptized or not,  it is never too late for anyone who is alive to convert to the deen of Islam!     The only time it becomes too late to convert or ask forgiveness from the Lord,  is when one has met with his appointment of death!

The only thing one has to do to convert to Islam,  is of his own free will,  declare the shahaadah or testification of Islam:  “I bear witness that there is no god except Allah Alone,   and I bear witness that Mohamed (saws) is His Messenger”.

One may declare this testification of Islam in the solitude of his house,  or if he wants to announce it to the general public,  he may go to the local mosque or Islamic Centre and declare the above simple testification.    As soon as one declares the Shahaadah or testification of Islam,   he/she becomes a muslim;  and all the rights that are due to a believer, will be accorded to him/her.

Q-2:  Also, how do you apply for an official name change?

In Islam,  there is no formal way or applications that needs to be filled for a person to change his name.   All one has to do,  is choose the name and announce that he would like to be called by this particular name in the future.

Each country has its own laws that require to be followed,  if one wishes to officially change his/her name.   This would need to be followed if one wills to change his/her name in all the official and legal documents like passport,  driver’s licence, etc.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
