Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Recently my wife was diagnosed with a cancer and my family members are advising me to move my bed to another place which is presently positioned exactly underneath a wooden arch; my family members have a feeling that sleeping underneath the arch is not good.  Therefore, please advise whether it is appropriate to move my bed to another place or thinking in this manner is shirk or biddah.

Your early response in this manner is appreciated.

Answer:

Superstition is shirk

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Respected brother in Islam, rest absolutely assured that whatever happens in the heavens and the earth, happens only and only with the Precise Will and Permission of the Lord Most High Who Created.  If it so happens that your wife has been diagnosed with an illness, know and believe with absolute conviction that this affliction is no more than a trial from your Lord…..and know and believe with absolute conviction that the position of the bed (or absolutely anything else) has nothing to do with the illness of your wife!!!

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 9 Surah Taubah verse 51:

Say: "Nothing will happen to us except what Allah has decreed for us:  He is our Protector";  and on Allah let the believers put their trust.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 3 Surah Ale Imraan verse 160:

If Allah helps you none can overcome you: if He forsakes you who is there after that that can help you?  In Allah then let believers put their trust.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 6 Surah Anaam verse 17:

If Allah touch thee with affliction none can remove it but He; if He touch thee with happiness He hath power over all things.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 33 Surah Ahzaab verse 3:

And put your trust in Allah Alone; and enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs.

Your Question: …..Therefore, please advise whether it is appropriate to move my bed to another place or thinking in this manner is shirk or biddah.

If one wishes to move one’s bed or piece of furniture to another place, there is absolutely no harm…..but if one (Allah forbid) believes that the placement of the furniture (or anything else) has something to do with one’s calamity or affliction, or that the movement of the furniture (or anything else) will somehow relieve or remove the affliction which has befallen them….then without an iota of a doubt, the belief in such baseless superstitions would be a manifestation of the abomination of ‘shirk’ in the Sight of the Lord!!!!

If one trusts, obeys, and follows the guidance and commands of Allah and His Messenger (saws),   one can be assured of never ever being misled;   but if one believes, obeys and follows any other guidance, other than that of Allah and His Messenger (saws), one can be assured of being led astray.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
