Fast before menses ghusl.

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Dear Brother Burhan,

Assalaam alykum warahmatullah,

Thank you for your regular mail which gives us a valuable information, may allah give you more strength to continue in same way. Ameen.

I have two question to ask:

My question:

1) For a women who is in a state of meses and had stopped fasting for the said days, but after the said days whether she can eat sahoor and perform fasting without performing gusl of purification, can she take this gusl after sahoor later in the day?

2) Can a couple eat sahoor and start fasting and take gusl of janabat later in the day.

wether in both these condition the fast will be valid?

(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer:

Fast before menses ghusl

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 3.153         Narrated by Abu Bakr bin Abdur Rahman

My father and I went to 'Aisha and she said, "I testify that Allah's Messenger (saws) at times used to get up in the morning in a state of Janaba from sexual intercourse, not from a wet dream, and then he would fast that day." Then he went to Um Salama (another wife of the Prophet (saws)) and she also narrated a similar thing.

Whilst being in the state of ceremonial purity is a pre-condition for offering prayers, or doing the ‘tawaf’, or reciting the Glorious Quran, etc….being in the state of purity is not a pre-condition for the worship of fasting in Shariah, which is evident from the authentic hadith quoted above.

Your Question: For a women who is in a state of meses and had stopped fasting for the said days, but after the said days whether she can eat sahoor and perform fasting without performing gusl of purification, can she take this gusl after sahoor later in the day?

If the menstruation period of the woman is over, and for any reason whatsoever she consumes the ‘suhoor’ or pre-dawn meal with the intention to observe fast, and then performs the ‘ghusl’ to purify herself from her menstruation later in the day……there is absolutely no harm and her fast will be considered absolutely valid.

Your Question: ….Can a couple eat sahoor and start fasting and take gusl of janabat later in the day.

To be in the state of purity is neither a pre-condition for consuming the ‘suhoor’ nor for fasting in Shariah…..thus if a couple enjoy marital relations in the night, consume the ‘suhoor’ or pre-dawn meal with the intention to observe fast, and then perform the ‘ghusl’ to purify themselves from their state of ‘janaba’ later….their fast will be considered absolutely valid and acceptable.

In both of the above cases, the ‘ghusl’ for purification would be obligatory before one offers their ‘fajr’ prayer…..for to be in the state of purity is an absolute pre-condition for prayers.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 5 Surah Maidah verse 6 (part):

6        O ye who believe! When ye prepare for prayer wash your faces and your hands (and arms) to the elbows; rub your heads (with water); and (wash) your feet to the ankles.  If ye are in a state of ceremonial impurity bathe your whole body.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
