I have heard that only tilawating Quran without understanding is of no benefit.

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,

what is the fajilat of tilawating Quran(without understanding)? we usually used to give khatam of Quran by tilawating it only without understanding it,is their any sawab of it?

if we read the english translation of Quran and after reciting whole Quran, will it be accepted as a khatam to Allah?

i want to give khatam at ramadan but i have heard that only tilawating Quran without understanding is of no benefit, but tilawating with tafsir takes time to give a khatam in ramadan...so,i have started to read the english translation and tafsir of Quran, which gives me more peace than before...what will i do actually, please help me brother...May Allah bless u,Ameen.

Answer:

Better best recite quran of translation

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your Question: what is the fajilat of tilawating Quran(without understanding)? we usually used to give khatam of Quran by tilawating it only without understanding it,is their any sawab of it?
Allah Subhanah, in His Infinite Wisdom and Knowledge, Chose to Reveal His Final Message in the Arabic language…..and no translation of the Glorious Quran, however much one may try or however good it may be, simply cannot be compared or be expected to extract the full vastness of meaning of the original Arabic language.  Thus, every believer must at least make an effort to learn the basic Quranic Arabic language.

If Arabic is not one’s first or chosen language, and one finds it easier to recite the Glorious Quran through a transliteration, there is absolutely no harm; and it is expected that the person would assuredly earn not only their due reward for the reciting of the Glorious Book of Allah, but also for their sincere striving.

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2137        Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud

Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "If anyone recites a letter from Allah's Book he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a tenfold reward.  I do not say that ‘Alif-Lam-Mim’ are one letter, but ‘alif’ is a letter, ‘lam’ is a letter, and ‘mim’ is a letter."

Sahih Muslim Hadith 1757     Narrated by Abu Umamah

Abu Umamah heard Allah's Messenger (saws) say: ‘Recite the Qur'an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite it.’

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 6.545         Narrated by Uthman

The Prophet (saws) said, "The best among you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it."

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 6.459         Narrated by Aisha

The Prophet (saws) said, "Such a person as recites the Qur'an and masters it by heart, will be with the noble righteous scribes (in Heaven); and such a person exerts himself to learn the Qur'an by heart, and recites it with great difficulty, will have a double reward."

There is absolutely no doubt that the recitation of the Glorious Quran has its inherent rewards, even if one does not completely understand what one is reciting…..but it would obviously be best, more rewarding, and more meritorious if along with its recitation in the original Arabic language, one strives to understand the Guidance of the Quran in the language they understand best, so that one may follow with conviction the wise dictates and guidance of the Quran in their lives.

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 257         Narrated by Abdullah ibn Amr

Allah's Messenger (saws) happened to pass by two groups (of Muslims) in the mosque and he said: ‘Both of them are good, but one is superior to the other. One group is supplicating Allah and praying to Him. If He so wills He will confer upon them and if He so wills He will withhold. So far as those who are acquiring the understanding of religion and its knowledge and are busy in teaching, they are superior. Verily I have been sent as a teacher. He then sat down amongst them.’

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 256         Narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas

The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: ‘Acquiring (religious) knowledge in company for an hour in the night is better than spending the whole night in prayer.’

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 249         Narrated by Al-Hasan al-Basri

Allah's Messenger (saws) said: ‘He whom death overtakes while he is engaged in acquiring (religious) knowledge with a view to reviving Islam with the help of it, there will be one degree between him and the Prophets in Paradise.’

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 220         Narrated by Anas ibn Malik

Allah's Messenger (saws) said: ‘One who goes out to search for (religious) knowledge is (devoted) to the Cause of Allah till he returns’

Sahih Muslim Hadith 6518     Narrated by Abu Hurayrah

Allah's Messenger (saws) as saying: ‘He who alleviates the suffering of a brother from the affections of the world, Allah will alleviate his affections from the sufferings of the Day of Resurrection. He who finds relief for one who is hard pressed, Allah will make things easy for him in the Hereafter, and he who conceals (the faults) of a Muslim, Allah would conceal his faults in the world and in the Hereafter. Allah is at the back of a servant so long as the servant is at the back of his brother.  He who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah will make that path easy, leading to Paradise for him and those persons who assemble in one of the houses of Allah (mosques), recite the Book of Allah and learn and teach the Qur'an (among themselves). There will descend upon them tranquility, mercy will cover them, the Angels will surround them and Allah will mention them in the presence of those near Him.’

Your Question: ..what will i do

Although both acts, the recitation of the Glorious Quran in its original Arabic language…and the striving to understand the Guidance of the Glorious Quran through a translation are good, one is undoubtedly better and more meritorious than the other.  Thus, if one wishes to do what is best, one should recite the Glorious Quran in the original Arabic script, and then read the translation and ‘tafseer’ of what one has recited….thus making oneself eligible to earn the appropriate rewards for both acts, Insha Allah.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
