Answer:

Fasting day of Arafah

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 2419  Narrated by Abu Qatadah

The Messenger of Allah (saws) said: ‘The observance of three days' fast every month and of one Ramadan to the other (i.e. the fast of Ramadan every year) is (equivalent to) a perpetual fast. I seek from Allah that fasting on the day of Arafah may atone for the sins of the preceding and the coming year,’

Because the Muslim Ummah is disunited in its present form into several nation states across the globe, it is indeed unfortunate that the believers worldwide do not follow a standard uniform Hijrah calendar, but the believers living in each state or region choose to derive and follow their own calendar!

Without an iota of a doubt, the day of Arafah is specific to the day when the pilgrims assemble on the blessed plains of Arafah near Makkah during the Hajj pilgrimage, and it would be best if the believers who are not on the Hajj pilgrimage themselves to strive to observe their voluntary fast of Arafah on that particular and specific day, regardless of wherever on the earth they may happen to be.

Unfortunately because of the present state of disunited Muslim Ummah, depending on their geographical location and the visibility of the moon in their region, some nations start the count of their Hijrah months a day or two before or after the day the believers in the region around the Holy city of Makkah start their count.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 9.85 Narrated by Umar bin Al Khattab

The Prophet (saws) said, 'O people! The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions, and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.’

Regardless of whether one chooses to fast on the day when the pilgrims on Hajj actually assemble in Arafah, or one chooses to fast on the 9th day of the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah which has been determined for them in their region…..the vast majority of the good scholars and jurists in Islam are of the opinion that the believers should neither fight, nor wrangle, nor argue, nor judge the other to be wrong or misguided, nor disunite the Ummah any further than it already is because of this apparent dispute…..for as long as one’s intention is to follow the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws) and fast on the Day of Arafah, Allah Subhanah will accept the worship of both and reward both for their intentions, Insha Allah.  And Allah Alone Knows Best.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
