One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

 

Dear brother, AsSalaamu Aleikum,

 

I would like to know if Platinum or diamond rings are allowed for men in Islam. I have heard for and against arguments. That is it is mentioned Gold is haraam, therefore Platinum should be allowed

as it is not been mentioned. Also Platinum was not around 1400 years ago.

On the other hand, some say that it is Silver that has been specified in hadith as a ring and nothing else should be allowed. Therefore only silver is allowed. And to this people group platimun like copper and bras as it is mined and has a similar metal grouping, and I believe we have been told in hadith not to wear copper/brass. So this issue seems to be down to the Ulema. Please clarify if we are allowed to wear a ring made of Platinum. Similarly, are we allowed to wear diamonds in rings? whether platinum or silver?

Platinum rings for men

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

 

Fiqh-us-Sunnah Fiqh 4.35a

Allah's Messenger (saws) said concerning silk and gold: "Both of these things, i.e. gold and silk, are forbidden for the males of my ummah, but they are permissible for the females."

 

Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 4224 Narrated by Abu Hurayrah

The Prophet (saws) said: ‘If anyone wants to put a ring of fire on one he loves, let him put a gold ring on him: if anyone wants to put a necklace of fire on one he loves, let him put a gold necklace on him, and if anyone wants to put a bracelet of fire on one he loves let him put a gold bracelet on him. Keep to silver and amuse yourselves with it.’

 

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 4391        Narrated by Abdullah ibn Ja'far ; Ali ibn AbuTalib

The Prophet (saws) used to wear a signet-ring on his right hand.

 

Sahih Muslim Hadith 5225     Narrated by Anas ibn Malik

The ring of Allah's Messenger (saws) was on this, and he pointed towards the little finger of his left hand.

 

Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 4211  Narrated by Buraydah ibn al-Hasib

A man came to the Prophet (saws) and he was wearing a signet-ring of yellow copper. He (saws) said to him: ‘How is it that I notice the odour of idols in you?’  So he threw it away, and came wearing an iron signet ring. He (the Prophet (saws)) said: ‘What is it that I see you wearing? The adornment of the inhabitants of Hell?’  So he threw it away. He asked: ‘O Messenger of Allah (saws), what material I must use?’ He (saws) replied: ‘Make it of silver, but do not weigh it as much as a mithqal (a small measure of weight)’.

 

Your Question: So this issue seems to be down to the Ulema. Please clarify if we are allowed to wear a ring made of Platinum. Similarly, are we allowed to wear diamonds in rings? whether platinum or silver?

Adornment and ornaments are generally associated with the nature of the female sex to enhance their beauty, and not particularly encouraged for the males in Islam.  The only reason the Messenger of Allah (saws) wore the signet-ring was because it was customary to seal a letter sent to foreign dignitaries in those times.

 

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 9.276         Narrated by Anas bin Malik

When the Prophet (saws) intended to write to the Byzantines, the people said, "They do not read a letter unless it is sealed (stamped)."  Therefore the Prophet (saws) took a silver ring--as if I am looking at its glitter now--and its engraving was: "Muhammad, Messenger of Allah."

 

Because there is no specific and particular command which forbids the believers from adorning themselves with platinum or precious stones like diamonds, rubies, etc.; the scholars who have given weight to the letter of the law opine that it would be deemed permissible for the believers to adorn themselves with it, if they wished to do so.

 

But the majority of the scholars who have given weight to the ‘spirit’ of the law are of the opinion that wearing adornments and jewelry simply as a means of decoration or show is just not consonant with the nature of the males, and should be left to the females.  Although they do not prescribe wearing jewelry as outright forbidden for the males, they do caution the believers to fear Allah and abstain from adorning themselves with any and all kinds of jewelry, regardless of the products it is made up of.  In our humble opinion, we believe this opinion is more accurate and closer to piety.
