I wanted some advice regarding halal income.

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Aslaam-u-aleikum, Please can you answer my following question. I work in a warehouse that handles goods for a large supermarket chain. Part of my daily work is handling spirits (wine etc.) is it haraam for me to handle these goods?

Assalamoalaikum wa rehmatullah respected brother burhan.

I wanted some advice regarding halal income. I reside in England (U.K.) I am a full-time university student and I work part-time and so do my siblings.

my siblings work at ASDA a supermarket chain which sells all sorts of merchandise ranging from clothes to alcohol etc.

my brother is bait {took allegiance} in a Sufi silsala {naqshabandi} and his friend also a Sufi holds a Friday night mehfil at our house and he said to my brother that, your income is not halal because you work at a organisation {asda} which sells sharab {alcohol}.

My brother’s job role is this, he works as a delivery driver for asda he stocks crates full of a customer order and delivers it at the required destination.

the problem is this, as students we can’t find office type jobs in this country as one is then asked to do job during the weekday whilst we go to university during the weekdays and work at weekends???? so it’s really difficult.

Although I’m not saying that, what our brother in Islam told us was wrong, what I mean is,it’s majbori for us as we have to somehow earn a living, pay bills etc.

Allah knows our niyat {intention} even we don’t like touching alcohol but as I said, we are compelled due to our conditions {halaat} at home.

I just wanted your advice on this matter because what my brother’s friend said to us has put us in two minds. Whenever you find time then please reply to my query ASAP.

Jazakallah kheir

Regards,

Answer:

Working in supermarket selling alcohol

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person,  no grave, no prophet,  no imam,  no dai,  nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 5 Surah Maidah verses 90-91:

O you who have believed!   ‘Khamr’ (all types of intoxicants),  games of chance,  idols,  and divining arrows are all abominable works of Shaitaan;  therefore,  stay (far) away from these so that you may attain success.   Indeed,  Shaitaan seeks to sow enmity and hatred among you by means of ‘khamr’ (intoxicants) and gambling,  and to prevent you from the Remembrance of Allah and from Salaah.   Will you not,  then,  abstain from these things?

Allah Subhanah in the above aayah clearly declares that ‘khamr’ or all types of intoxicants are the abominable works of Shaitaan,  and commands the believers to stay far away from them!    The term used by Allah in the Quran to guide the believers to stay away is ‘fajj-tanebu’,  commanding the believers that this ‘khamr’ is so hated by Allah for the believers,  that they not only should abstain from consuming it,  they should stay far away from it!    Some scholars have opined that the term ‘fajj-tanebu’ is stronger than the term ‘haraam’, and a believer who sincerely fears Allah and the Last Day, must not put himself in a position that he associates or comes close to those who consume intoxicants!

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2776        Narrated by Anas ibn Malik

Allah's Messenger (saws) invoked the curse of Allah on ten people in connection with wine:  the wine-presser, the one who has it pressed, the one who drinks it, the one who conveys it, the one to whom it is conveyed, the one who serves it, the one who sells it, the one who benefits from the price paid for it, the one who buys it, and the one for whom it is bought.

One cannot say with conviction that the salary one gets paid from working in a super-market is haraam; but without a doubt the person would be guilty of associating with something that has been clearly described and declared as ‘haraam’ by Allah and His Messenger (saws).

It would best for you to immediately seek to employ your talents elsewhere where the boundaries of Allah are not violated; and if you make this intention and move only for the sake and fear of Allah Subhanah, it is expected that not only will your Lord Most Gracious provide you from His Endless Bounties in the life of this world, but He will appreciate your noble intention and deeds, and bestow upon you a generous reward in the eternal life of the Hereafter.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me alone.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
