I m resident of Jeddah KSA. This time I paid Hajj with my family, the last day of Hajj we came to Jeddah from Mina without Tawaf-e-Wida but we paid Tawaf-e-khudoom with Saih one day before. Some people said Jeddah resident can pay Tawaf-e-Wida later on . Kindly advise me.

Tawaf wida farewell

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person,  no grave, no prophet,  no imam,  no dai,  nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

 

Fiqh-us-Sunnah Fiqh 5.123a

This is called the ‘Farewell Tawaf’ because by this a pilgrim bids farewell to the Sacred House.  It is also known as Tawaf As-Sadr (Tawaf Before Departing) because it marks the departing of pilgrims from Makkah. In this there is no jogging (ramal), and it is the last rite performed by a nonresident pilgrim in Makkah before leaving for his home.  Malik has reported in Al-Muwatta that Umar said, "The last rite of Hajj is tawaf around the Ka'bah."

As for residents of Makkah, and the menstruating women (pilgrims), they are not obligated to perform it, nor to pay any atonement for missing it.  Both Bukhari and Muslim reported from Ibn 'Abbas that he said, "A menstruating woman (pilgrim) is permitted to depart (without performing the Farewell Tawaf)."  According to another report, he said: "People were ordered to make the tawaf of the Ka'bah their last rite; the menstruating women were, however, excused from it."

It is also reported by Muslim and Bukhari that Safiyah, the wife of the Prophet (saws) had her monthly period during Hajj.  When the Prophet (saws) was informed about this, he said, "Is she going to hold us here (till she performs her rites of Hajj)?"  He was told that she had already performed all her Hajj rites except the Farewell Tawaf.  The Prophet (saws) said, "There is no harm then, (let us go)."

 

‘Tawaaf al-wida’ or the farewell tawaaf is indeed amongst the ‘wajib’ or obligatory rites of Hajj, and every believer who performs the Hajj is obligated to perform it just before he departs from Makkah (except those who are residents of Makkah or a woman who is experiencing her menstruation).

‘Tawaaf-e-Kudoom’ is the tawaaf one performs as soon as one enters the Sacred Mosque for the first time on a particular visit; thus the tawaaf you performed a day before you left could either have been the ‘tawaaf-e-ifaadah’ or a voluntary tawaaf, and cannot be considered or fulfill the obligation of the farewell tawaf. 

 

If you were unable to perform the ‘tawaaf-ul-wida’ or farewell tawaaf just before you left Makkah for Jeddah after your Hajj for any reason, there is absolutely no harm and no prescribed ‘kaffarah’ or atonement for missing it, but it is something you must fulfill as soon as it is easy and convenient for you. 

 

If one is non-resident of Makkah, it is best to perform the ‘tawaaf-ul-wida’ just before one leaves for one’s home after fulfilling one’s Hajj rites. But if one, for any reason whatsoever, leaves without performing the farewell tawaaf, there is no harm if he fulfills this obligation at any other time which is easy and convenient for him to do so.

 

Some people said Jeddah resident can pay Tawaf-e-Wida later on . Kindly advise me

‘Tawaaf-ul-wida’ is ‘waajib’ (obligatory) on every non-resident of Makkah who performs the Hajj, and it should be performed as the last rite of the Hajj pilgrimage.  The people who said that residents of Jeddah or surrounding areas who have easy access to the Haram can do the farewell tawaaf at a later date only meant it as an option and a way of convenience, perhaps because of the heavy rush in the Haram.

 

Thus it is not as if residents of Jeddah or surrounding areas cannot or should not fulfill the obligatory ‘tawaaf-ul-wida’ as their last rite immediately after their Hajj pilgrimage; but because of their near vicinity and easy access to the Haram, they have an option to fulfill their obligation at any time of their convenience, if they wish to do so.
