Wudu and Gusl

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

In the name of Allah, the most beneficial and merciful. This is my first time i wisited this site today  and i found very helpful and your intention i really appreciate.

My questions are:

There are three Farz of Ghusul.

1) If anyone do the ghusul with these Farz, is it necessary to do the Wudu or he/she can perform Salat without Wudu?

2) Umrah can be performed without wudu if ghusul is done properly?

3) One of my friend told that you have to make wudu before Ghusul, how is it possible that without clothes wudul will be  performed in the condition of Najis.

I will be very grateful to you if you publish these question and send me reply on the same email.

Answer:

Wudu and Gusl

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person,  no grave, no prophet,  no imam,  no dai,  nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

May Allah Subhanah reward you with the best of this world and the Hereafter for your kind comments of encouragement for our humble efforts in the propagation of the Truth.    If our humble and modest efforts have helped even one brother or sister get closer to Allah and His Deen of Truth, then we would consider ourselves indeed fortunate to have been given this opportunity by the Lord Most Merciful to serve in His Cause.  We hope,  beg,  and pray the Merciful Lord  accepts our humble and weak efforts,  forgives us our shortcomings,  and saves you, us,  and all the believers from the torment of the Hell Fire.  Ameen.

Q-1:  If anyone do the ghusul with these Farz, is it necessary to do the Wudu or he/she can perform Salat without Wudu?

If one has performed the ‘ghusl’ or full bath with the intention to purify oneself for prayer, there is absolutely no need to re-do the wudu after the ghusl as the ghusl is a bigger form of purity than the wudu.   The ghusl of the person would more than satisfy the conditions of wudu.

Q-2: Umrah can be performed without wudu if ghusul is done properly?

If one has performed the ‘ghusl’, there is no need to re-do the wudu; as the ghusl is considered a bigger form of purification than the wudu.  A believer who has done ‘ghusl’ will be considered pure and available to offer his prayers or perform the Umrah.

Q-3: One of my friend told that you have to make wudu before Ghusul, how is it possible that without clothes wudul will be  performed in the condition of Najis.

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 1.272 Narrated by Hisham bin Urwa

(on the authority of his father) 'Aisha said, "Whenever Allah's Messenger (saws) took the bath of Janaba (post sexual impurity), he cleaned his hands and performed ‘wudu’ (ablution) like that for prayer and then took a bath and rubbed his hair, till he felt that the whole skin of the head had become wet, then he would pour water thrice and wash the rest of the body."

It is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws) to perform the ‘wudu’ before one takes the full bath of purification or ‘ghusl’.  There is absolutely no condition in Shariah that a person must be clothed or pure to perform the ‘wudu’.  Whenever the Messenger of Allah (saws) intended to take a full bath of purification (ghusl), he would first perform the ‘wudu’ and then take the full bath.  Also whenever the Prophet (saws) was in a state of post-sexual impurity and wanted to eat, drink or sleep in that state, he (saws) would first perform the ‘wudu’.

Fiqh-us-Sunnah Fiqh 1.41a

To remove a sexual impurity

If a person in a state of post-sex impurity wants to eat, drink or have intercourse again, he should perform ablution.

Said 'Aishah, "When the Prophet (saws) was in a state of impurity because of intercourse and wanted to eat or sleep, he would perform ‘wudu’ (ablution)."  Ammar ibn Yasar reported that the Prophet (saws) permitted a person in post-sex impurity to eat, drink or sleep if he performed ‘wudu’ (ablution) first.

Related by Ahmad and at-Tirmidhi.

Abu Sa'eed reported that the Prophet (saws) said, "If one has intercourse with his wife and wants to repeat the act, he should perform ‘wudu’ (ablution)."

Related by Bukhari and Muslim.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
