Stoning at Hajj

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Could you please clarify on the below points:

While my father was at KSA to perform Hajj, he was not well and in a critical condition, he was in the hospital and early morning on the day of Arafath , we discharged him adn took himfromMina to Arafath to complete the stay at Arafath. After coming from Arafath to Mina, he was not in a condition to stone the jamrath, so I did it on his behalf

Secondly my mother and wife and son (one and half yr old) were also accompanied. I accompanied my mother, wife & child at Mina and completed the stoning of the Jamrah for the other days on their behalf too. (There was too much of pushing and stampede at the time of stoning and my wife with child moved back with my mother for which I did the stoning on their behalf too, including the child).

The tour operators and maulvis were saying that I cannot stone on behalf of my father who was critically ill and my wife wo was at Makkah taking care of my fatehr at the hospital.

Please let me know if this is permissible or any sacrifice is liable.

(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer:

Stoning at Hajj

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person,  no grave, no prophet,  no imam,  no dai,  nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Fiqh-us-Sunnah Fiqh 5.108b

Persons who for a valid reason, illness, etc., cannot themselves throw the pebbles they may ask someone else to throw pebbles on their behalf.  Hadrat Jabir (r.a.) said, "We performed Hajj with the Messenger of Allah (saws) and we had some women and children with us. We (adults) uttered talbiyah and threw pebbles on their behalf."

Related by Ahmad and Ibn Majah.

Your throwing of the pebbles at the Jamaraat on behalf of your old or sick parents, your wife and your children is absolutely permissible and valid according to Shariah; and there is absolutely no need to give a ‘damm’ or sacrifice of atonement if you threw the pebbles on their behalf.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
