As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Some one asked me a question that why do we do tawaf anticlock wise during umra in mecca

(There may be some grammatical and spelling errors in the above statement. The forum does not change anything from questions, comments and statements received from our readers for circulation in confidentiality.)

Answer:

Why Tawaf is done anticlockwise?

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person,  no grave, no prophet,  no imam,  no dai,  nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 22 Surah Hajj verse  67:To every People have we appointed rites and ceremonies which they must follow.  Let them not then dispute with thee on the matter, but do thou invite (them) to thy Lord: for thou art assuredly on the Right Way.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 22 Surah Hajj verses 29-30:

29      "Then let them complete the rites prescribed for them, perform their vows, and circumambulate the Ancient House."

30      Such (is the Pilgrimage): whoever honors the Sacred Rites of Allah for him it is good in the sight of his Lord.

Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 2 Surah Baqarah verses 127-128:

127    And remember Ibraheem and Ismail raised the foundations of the House (with this prayer): "Our Lord! accept (this service) from us, for Thou art the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

128    "Our Lord! make of us Muslims bowing to Thy (Will), and of our progeny a people Muslim bowing to Thy (Will), and show us our places for the celebration of (due) rites; and turn unto us (in mercy); for Thou art the Oft-Returning Most-Merciful.

To circumambulate the Sacred House at Makkah is a rite of worship taught and decreed by the All-Mighty to His Messengers, who practice it themselves and teach it to the believers.   To circumambulate the Sacred House in Makkah anticlockwise seven times is the Sunnah of the Prophets Ibraheem (a.s.),  Ismail (a.s.), Mohamed ar-Rasool Allah (saws), etc.

The Merciful Lord Himself appoints the Rites for the believers that best please Him; and He has appointed that the tawaaf or circumambulation of His Sacred House be done anticlockwise.   Neither did the Messenger of Allah (saws) explain the logic behind doing the tawaaf anticlockwise, nor did any of his noble companions ever ask him why the tawaaf was done the way it was prescribed.  The exact and specific wisdom for performing and celebrating the specific rites are known to All-Knowing, All-Wise Lord, Who appointed them in Truth.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
