Zakat on student allowance

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

assalamualykum
in England, the state gives around £2-300 per year to college students (aged 16+) as a grant for any equipment, etc. It is means tested according to parent`s income. If at the end of the year only half of this money has been used, is zakaat due on the remaining money?+ what if they are still continuing their course the following year? At the end of their studies the student has £200 left from this grant money. will zakaat be due on this until it is used up?

Answer:

Zakat on student allowance

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person,  no grave, no prophet,  no imam,  no dai,  nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

The zakah is only due on the believers who have a combined net worth value of about US$1,000.00.  If the student has saved only 200 pounds (which is about $300.00) and that is the only savings he has,  then there is no zakah due from the person.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
