University loan

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

can muslims in UK take out student loan so that they can go to university if they cant afford to pay for it them self.
the loan would have to be paid back once you earn 21,000 per year and work however you have to pay it back with interest.
however what if you don't find a job at all or one that pays less than 21,000 so that this way you don't have to pay back the loan and incur interest. would it still be considered haram.
i do not know any other way to go to university apart from take this loan as there is no other alternative. there are bursaries and grants but they do not cover such a huge amount of money. i have considered getting an apprenticeship or going to work however getting a work without a degree is very hard and with an apprenticeship i do not know whether it would compromise my deen as there might not be no prayer facility whereas at university there most likely is a prayer room also there is a chance that i might be working with the opposite gender at an apprenticeship or work. therefore i am very confused on what to do as i either have to be in education or at work in this country and i much rather to go university to get educated than work as there are limited choices i have if i go to work as i have no qualifications

Answer:

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Allah swt in His infinite wisdom has strongly forbidden ribba (interest based loans). There is no allowance for the reason of this loan. It is not as if, if the cause is good a loan can be taken. If you do not have the means to secure an university education, then so be it. Suddenly in this modern world an university education has become the be all and end all of all things. There is no such requirement to study the Quran and the deen, but a university education is a must. What will one achieve with a university education……maximum a good job. Most people crave a good job against the understanding of their deen to their peril You cannot attain jannah with a university degree.

If you willfully break the commandments of Allah swt and take out an interest bearing loan, then be aware that He swt has promised that He swt will take away all His blessings. Without His swt blessings a believer will have no barakah in his rizq. So what did one gain from this education?

In stead, be thankful to your Rabb, take heed of His commandments and stick firmly to your deen. InshaAllah if He swt wills you will receive His blessings, barakah and everything good. The only thing you need to do is put all your trust in Allah swt alone.

It does not behove a believer to break his promise or bond. If he takes out a loan then he does not connive not to pay back. That is a debt he must pay back irrespective of the consequences, or not take the loan. Taking a interest bearing loan is not even an option.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
