Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.  (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Ramadhan Mubarak! Assalamu Alaikum! 1.When does one stop eating during Suhur? 2.When does one start eating after fast? 3.During Suhur when one hears the adhan but still has a piece of food in his hand is he allowed to finish it. 4.Besides the Quran where is your source of hadiths? Is it from Sunni hadiths.

Answer:

Timings of Suhur

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol,  no person,  no grave, no prophet,  no imam,  no dai,  nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Your comment: When does one stop eating during Suhur?

One should stop eating and drinking and begin the fast when it is time for fajr prayer and the adhaan is announced.

Your comment: When does one start eating after fast?

One should break the fast as soon as the sun has set and the Magrib adhaan is announced.

Your comment: During Suhur when one hears the adhan but still has a piece of food in his hand is he allowed to finish it.

There is absolutely no harm if the food in the mouth is finished.   But one should abstain from the food and drink and begin the fast as soon as the Fajr adhaan is announced.

Your comment: Besides the Quran where is your source of hadiths? Is it from Sunni hadiths.

Beloved brother, the hadiths are the record of what the Messenger of Allah (saws) said, and/or did.  There are no Shia or Sunni hadiths… The hadiths are nothing more than the documented records of what the deeds and words of the Last Messenger of Allah (saws).

At the time of the Messenger of Allah (saws), there were no Sunnis or Shias… all the people who narrated the hadiths were muslims. Thus, in reality, there is no such thing as Shia hadiths and/or Sunni hadiths.

Besides, the record of the hadiths as we know them today were recorded at least 100-200 after the death of the Noble Prophet (saws).  It is not as if the believers during this time did not pray, fast, or live their lives according to the teachings and guidance of the Messenger of Allah (saws). The noble companions and the noble ‘ahle-bayt’ learnt the deeds from the Messenger of Allah (saws), and taught it to their generation, who in turn taught it to their generation.  Then at some point, some scholars collected these narrations and gave it a document form which we now know as hadiths.  Thus, what we want to follow is the Sunnah or Way of the Messenger of Allah (saws); and the hadiths are no more than a documented record of those deeds.   The Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (saws) was established long before the hadiths were documented!

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me.  Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your Brother in Islam,

Burhan
