Sectism and Nationalism

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His  forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is no one (no idol, no person, no grave, no prophet, no imam, no dai, nobody!) worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad(saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

When people are engrossed in rituals and customs, and think that these rituals and customs themselves are their deen; it becomes extremely difficult to convince them to break from the tradition of their forefathers and follow the Quran and Sunnah. In such circumstances, it is very important that one uses extreme patience and wisdom to guide them to the Truth of Allah and His Messenger (saws).

Allah has blessed you to be the prayer leader or imam of the mosque, and put you on a platform whereby you can enjoin the good and forbid the evil. You can use this platform to slowly but surely make the believers know the difference between following Sunnah and following Biddah (innovations).

What you need to do is bring your congregation closer to the guidance of the Holy Quran and the Sunnah, and encourage them to read and understand these two sources of knowledge. Only then will the believers realize that Islam is way beyond the dogmas of sectism and nationalism; Islam is the name of the One Universal Deen, where regardless of your color, or race, or sect, or language, or region; we are all united in this Ummah as One Community of Muslims who believe and worship the same One Lord.

This will take time, so you will have to use patience and wisdom to take your congregation out of the shallow banners of sectism and nationalism, and make them all united to stand under the vast banner of Islam.

Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 23 Surah Mu’minoon verse 52-54: And you all belong to one and the same ummah, and I(Allah) am your Lord; so fear Me Alone! Yet afterwards the people divided themselves into different sects, and each sect rejoicing in what it has. Well, leave them deeply involved in their heedlessness up to an appointed time.

The closer you bring your congregation to the understanding of the Holy Quran, the sooner this problem will disappear, Insha Allah.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

Your brother and well wisher in Islam,

Burhan
