Repentance for major sins in past year

Mu' meneen Brothers and Sisters,

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Assalamu Alaikum
I don't really want to give much detail, but i have commited a major sin. I have also committed several other sins in the past year. One day i woke up and realised how i have done so much bad things, and i cried and cried for several days. Alhamdulilah i have begun to pray 5 times a day since a month ago and i say subhanalahi wabihamdihi 100 times a day. Sometimes i cannot eat, sleep and i feel sick! I have read in several places that Allah will forgive you as long as you repent and make intention to never do it again. I have several questions. Insha'allah you can answer them.
1. Do i have to repent for each major sin. By What if i forget about a sin and i don't ebd up repenting for that particular sin?
2. I have repented for what i have done, but each day I remember everything which torments me inside. What can i or shall i do about this?
3. Im worried that Allah won't forgive me, even though he is the Most Forgiving and Merciful.
4. At the end of salah, when you make dua, i say "Allah please forgive me and save me from hellfire". Is this okay or not? Do i have to say this for every dua?
5. What else can expiate this major sin?
6. Im afraid of dying and afraid of the hellfire. This gives me nightmares. What can I do?
Jazakhallah Khair. May Allah bless you for your work :)

Answer:

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

1. Do i have to repent for each major sin. By What if i forget about a sin and i don't ebd up repenting for that particular sin?

Sister, do not despair of Allah swt Mercy. Once you have sincerely repented and made a solemn promise never to repeat that sin again, then you must rest assured of His Mercy and Forgiveness and continue to lead a righteous life and make as many supplications as is easy for you. There is a chance you can forget to repent for a particular sin committed in the past, the best thing is to beg for forgiveness of all sins, major or minor in a general way. InshaAllah you will feel contended.

2. I have repented for what i have done, but each day I remember everything which torments me inside. What can i or shall i do about this?

A righteous slave of Allah swt will always feel that way. It is a sure sign of true repentance. Just continue with good deeds and InshaAllah in time your heart will feel the tranquility that comes from sincere prayer and repentance.

3. Im worried that Allah won't forgive me, even though he is the Most Forgiving and Merciful.

A believer never despairs of Allah swt Mercy and Forgiveness. Allah swt has promised His Mercy and Forgiveness for all the sins of the children of Adam if one sincerely repents and makes amends before one meets his destiny with death.

4. At the end of salah, when you make dua, i say "Allah please forgive me and save me from hellfire". Is this okay or not? Do i have to say this for every dua?

The duaa is perfect and one can mention it regularly if one wishes because that is the ultimate goal.

5. What else can expiate this major sin?

Repentance, making amends, non repetition of sins, supplications, prayers and doing of good deeds are the many things that will expiate sins.

6. Im afraid of dying and afraid of the hellfire. This gives me nightmares. What can I do?

Sister this is normal to all human beings. Because of our numerous sins a devout believer knows that he/she cannot enter paradise on his own merit, so he continuously begs his Lord Creator for Mercy without which none can enter paradise. This fear is the key to remain within the boundaries of Islam and if one has it then you can be assured you are on the right path.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
