Dreams Is this a type of hidden shirk: So i was wondering, ive heard that in islam there are people who can interpret dreams

As Salaam Aleikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. (May Allah's Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon all of you)

One of our brothers/sisters has asked this question:

Salaam Recently i listened to a lecture by Shiekh Yasir Qadhi online and he was explaining what shirk is and types of hidden shirk. Also he was talking about mind readers, magicians, astronomers and good luck charms and how they are shirk. So i was wondering, ive heard that in islam there are people who can interpret dreams so if a woman dreamt about something that meant that she was going to have a child then isnt this like predicting the future and could this lead to someone believing that they are going to live longer up until the babys born. So could this be shirk as your depending on something other than Allah. I hope this makes sense, its been on my mind ever since i listened to the lecture. Jazakallah

Answer:

Dreams and Shirk

In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and whoever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. We bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but Allah Alone, and we bear witness that Muhammad (saws) is His slave-servant and the seal of His Messengers.

Without an iota of a doubt, all types and predictions of mind readers, magicians, astronomers, good luck charms, etc. are considered a manifestation of 'shirk' in Shariah.

Interpretations of dreams on the other hand is definitely not a manifestation of 'shirk', as the foundation of a dream is based on one's own visual experience in their sleep rather than the guesswork of a con-artist making some prediction out of thin air!!!

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 9.144   Narrated by Abu Huraira

Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "When the Day of Resurrection approaches, the dreams of a believer will hardly fail to come true, and a dream of a believer is one of forty-six parts of Prophetism, and whatever belongs to Prothetism can never be false."  Muhammad bin Sirin said, 'There are three types of dreams:

  • The reflection of one's thoughts and experiences one has during wakefulness,
  • what is suggested by the Shaytaan to frighten the dreamer,
  • or glad tidings from Allah.

So, if someone has a dream which he dislikes, he should not tell it to others, but get up and offer a prayer.' "

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allah’s Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is only ones. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.
